peaches and cream pops recipe by Nanette Wong for Sugar & Cloth

There’s nothing quite like a refreshing frozen treat to combat the sweltering summer heat, and few combinations are as classic and comforting as peaches and cream. Imagine a burst of juicy, sun-ripened peach flavor, perfectly blended with rich, velvety cream, all captured in a delightful homemade popsicle. This Peaches and Cream Popsicle recipe isn’t just a dessert; it’s a nostalgic journey back to simpler times, embodying the very essence of summer with every delicious bite.

My inspiration for these luscious popsicles struck during a recent stroll through the vibrant local farmer’s market. The stalls were overflowing with an abundance of fresh, fragrant peaches – their fuzzy skins promising sweet, succulent flesh within. The sight instantly conjured images of a creamy, striped peach popsicle, a visual and culinary ode to the season. I envisioned a treat bursting with authentic peachy goodness, beautifully layered to signify the classic pairing, and destined to become a beloved warm-weather staple.

These popsicles offer the ultimate indulgence, transporting your taste buds to a blissful paradise. They are incredibly easy to make, require minimal ingredients, and provide a healthier, more flavorful alternative to store-bought options. Get ready to embark on a refreshing journey into pure, peachy bliss!

Why You’ll Love These Peaches and Cream Popsicles

Beyond their undeniable deliciousness, these homemade peaches and cream popsicles offer a multitude of reasons to become your go-to summer dessert. Firstly, they harness the natural sweetness and vibrant flavor of fresh peaches, a true bounty of the summer season. By using ripe, in-season fruit, you ensure the most intense and authentic peach taste, far surpassing anything artificial.

Secondly, these popsicles are incredibly customizable. While the classic peaches and cream pairing is heavenly, you have the flexibility to adjust the sweetness, experiment with dairy alternatives, and even introduce subtle complementary flavors. This makes them suitable for various dietary needs and personal preferences, ensuring everyone can enjoy a taste of summer.

Thirdly, making popsicles at home is a fun and rewarding activity, perfect for involving kids in the kitchen or simply enjoying a creative culinary escape. The process is straightforward, and the result is a wholesome treat you can feel good about serving. Forget the added sugars and artificial ingredients often found in commercial frozen desserts; with this recipe, you control exactly what goes into your pops.

Finally, the layered aesthetic of these popsicles is simply enchanting. The alternating peach and cream layers create a visually appealing treat that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. They’re perfect for summer parties, backyard barbecues, or simply as a special everyday indulgence to cool down on a hot afternoon. They’re more than just a dessert; they’re an experience.

Gather Your Simple Ingredients

Creating these delightful popsicles starts with a few key ingredients, each playing a crucial role in achieving the perfect balance of flavor and texture. We focus on fresh, high-quality components to ensure a truly superior taste experience.

  • Chopped fresh peaches — The star of our show! You’ll need approximately 4 medium, ripe peaches to yield about 2 cups of chopped fruit. The riper the peaches, the sweeter and more fragrant your popsicles will be.
  • Granulated Sugar — Used for both the simple syrup and to sweeten the cream mixture, ensuring a balanced sweetness that complements the natural tartness of the peaches.
  • Vanilla Extract — A touch of vanilla enhances the creamy notes and adds depth to the overall flavor profile.
  • Greek Yogurt — This is key to achieving that wonderfully thick and creamy texture. Greek yogurt, with its reduced water content, provides a luxurious mouthfeel and a delightful slight tang that beautifully contrasts with the sweet peaches.
  • Whole Milk — We recommend using whole milk for the creamiest possible texture. Its higher fat content contributes significantly to the richness of the popsicles.

Can You Make These Peach Popsicles Dairy-Free?

Absolutely! While our original recipe utilizes full-fat Greek yogurt and whole milk for their exceptional creaminess and slight tangy notes, these Peaches and Cream Popsicles are wonderfully adaptable for those following a dairy-free diet. The goal is still to achieve a luscious, creamy texture, and there are excellent plant-based alternatives that perform beautifully.

To create dairy-free creamy peach popsicles, simply swap out the traditional Greek yogurt and whole milk for their dairy-free counterparts. For the Greek yogurt, an unsweetened coconut yogurt or almond-based yogurt with a similar thick consistency would be ideal. These alternatives mimic the tang and richness that Greek yogurt provides. When selecting plant-based milk, opt for full-fat coconut milk (from a can, shaken well) or a creamy oat milk. These options have a higher fat content than almond or soy milk, which is crucial for achieving that desired velvety texture in your popsicles.

It’s worth noting that while dairy-free alternatives will alter the exact flavor profile slightly, they will still yield a wonderfully refreshing and creamy popsicle bursting with peach flavor. You might need to adjust the sugar content slightly depending on the sweetness of your chosen dairy-free yogurt or milk. Feel free to experiment to find your perfect balance. Crafting Your Delicious Peach Popsicles Step-by-Step

Making these Peaches and Cream Popsicles is a rewarding process that breaks down into a few simple stages. Patience is key, especially when creating the beautiful layered effect, but the results are well worth the wait.

To make the simple syrup:

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until all the sugar crystals have completely dissolved. Once the syrup is clear and smooth, remove it from the heat and set it aside to cool completely. This cooling step is essential to prevent it from thinning out your peach mixture later.

To make the peach mixture:

  1. Combine the freshly chopped peaches and 2 tablespoons of water in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. While the peaches are heating in the pan, gently crush them using a potato masher or a sturdy wooden spoon. The goal is to soften the peaches and encourage them to release their juices without burning them. Continue mashing until the peaches are mostly broken down into soft clumps.
  3. Once the peaches are thoroughly softened and juicy, strain the mixture over a bowl. Press firmly on the solids to extract as much peach juice as possible. Reserve the flavorful peach juice.
  4. Add the cooled simple syrup to the strained peach juice. Start with about 3/4 of the simple syrup and taste. Adjust the amount to your liking, adding more syrup if you prefer a sweeter peach layer. You’ll want a vibrant peach flavor that isn’t overly sweet at this stage, as it will be balanced by the creamy layer.

To make the cream mixture:

In a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, whole milk, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk all the ingredients together until the mixture is completely smooth and well combined. Ensure there are no sugar granules remaining and the vanilla is evenly distributed. The texture should be creamy and pourable.

To create the layered look:

This step is where the magic happens and requires a bit of patience. Begin by pouring a small amount of the peach mixture into the bottom of each popsicle mold. Place the molds in the freezer for about 20 minutes, or until that first layer is partially set but not completely frozen solid. This partial freezing prevents the next layer from fully mixing. Next, add a layer of the cream mixture, and return the molds to the freezer for another 20 minutes to partially set. Continue alternating between the peach and cream mixtures, freezing for approximately 20 minutes after each layer, until your molds are filled. Once all layers are poured and the last layer is slightly set, gently insert your popsicle sticks. This method ensures distinct, beautiful stripes. Finally, freeze the popsicles for an additional 2-4 hours, or ideally overnight, until they are completely solid and ready to enjoy.

Recipe Notes and Expert Tips for Perfect Popsicles

Making delicious homemade popsicles is an art, and a few expert tips can elevate your Peaches and Cream Popsicles from good to absolutely extraordinary. Pay attention to these details for the best possible results.

Can you use frozen peaches?

While fresh peaches are highly recommended for this recipe, especially since it calls for extracting natural peach juice, you can adapt if only frozen peaches are available. If using frozen peaches, allow them to thaw completely before proceeding with the mashing and straining steps. Keep in mind that frozen peaches might yield less juice and may have a slightly different texture when mashed. Alternatively, you could use store-bought peach juice, but be mindful of its sweetness and adjust the amount of simple syrup accordingly to avoid overly sweet popsicles. The riper the fresh peach, the better – look for peaches that give slightly when gently squeezed, indicating maximum juiciness and flavor. Always remember to remove the peach pits before chopping your peaches.

Choosing the Right Peaches for Maximum Flavor

The success of these popsicles heavily relies on the quality of your peaches. Freestone peaches are generally easier to work with as their pits are not attached to the flesh. Look for varieties like Redhaven, Elberta, or Contender, which are known for their sweet, juicy profiles. When selecting peaches, gently squeeze them. A ripe peach will have a slight give, a vibrant color, and a fragrant aroma. Avoid peaches that are rock hard or have any green patches, as they are underripe, and those that are overly soft or bruised.

Different ways to experiment with the flavors

This recipe provides a fantastic base for flavor experimentation! To add a twist to the peach layer, consider swapping out the plain simple syrup for a brown sugar simple syrup, which will impart a deeper, caramel-like note, or a refreshing mint simple syrup for a cool, invigorating flavor. Other fantastic additions include a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the peach mixture for a warm, comforting spice. For a more sophisticated touch, a tiny splash of almond extract in the cream mixture can elevate the flavor profile. You could also blend in other berries, like raspberries or blueberries, with your peaches for a mixed-fruit popsicle.

What do I do with the leftover peach simple syrup mixture?

You’ll likely have about 1/4 cup of the peach simple syrup mixture remaining, and it’s too delicious to waste! Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it will keep for up to two weeks. This versatile syrup is fantastic in a variety of applications. Drizzle it over pancakes, waffles, or ice cream for an extra burst of peach flavor. It also pairs beautifully in baked goods, adding moisture and sweetness. For adults, it’s an excellent addition to cocktails that call for simple syrup, such as a refreshing peach daiquiri or a vibrant peach & blackberry bramble. Don’t let a drop go to waste!

How long do the peach ice cream popsicles keep?

Once fully frozen, these homemade peach and cream popsicles will maintain their quality in the freezer for approximately 8 weeks. For best results, store them in an airtight container or individual freezer-safe bags to prevent freezer burn and absorb any ambient freezer odors. When you’re ready to enjoy them, if they’re stuck in the mold, simply run the popsicle molds under warm water for a few seconds. This will gently loosen the popsicles, allowing you to easily remove them.

What if I don’t want the layered look?

While the distinct striped layers are undeniably charming and part of what makes these peach and cream popsicles so appealing, you can certainly opt for a simpler, swirled, or even fully mixed popsicle. Choosing not to layer will significantly cut down on the prep time, as you won’t need to freeze between each step. To achieve this simpler version, prepare both the peach mixture and the cream mixture individually, as instructed. Then, you have two options:

  1. Swirled Popsicles: Gently alternate pouring spoonfuls of the peach and cream mixtures into the popsicle molds, then use a skewer or a thin knife to gently swirl them together once or twice, creating a beautiful marble effect.
  2. Fully Mixed Popsicles: Combine both the peach mixture and the cream mixture in a large bowl and whisk them together until they are thoroughly blended. Then, simply pour the combined mixture into your popsicle molds. This will result in a uniform, creamy peach popsicle that is just as delicious, albeit without the visual flair of the layers.

Both methods yield a fantastic treat, so choose the one that best suits your time and aesthetic preference!
