From the moment we saw those two lines, our world shifted. Every kick, every doctor’s appointment, every tiny detail became a source of immense joy and curiosity. Like many expecting parents, the question of “boy or girl?” began to dominate our thoughts. We initially harbored dreams of being that effortlessly cool couple who could patiently wait until birth for the big surprise. We pictured ourselves embracing the mystery, savouring every moment without knowing. We truly thought we could manage it, perhaps for a week, maybe even two! (Spoiler alert: we are clearly not those people.)

The Temptation of an Early Peek & A Misleading Hint

The allure of knowing was simply too strong. We found ourselves among the ranks of those eager parents who get the early test done and then, armed with the sealed envelope containing the sacred information, perform a series of elaborate maneuvers. Holding it up to the light, tilting it at every conceivable angle, scrutinizing every shadow and crease—all in a desperate, albeit futile, attempt to decipher the secret before our carefully planned colorful gender reveal was even a fully formed idea. It’s a hilarious and utterly relatable struggle, isn’t it?

To be fair, our resolve was severely tested by a very confident ultrasound technician at my OB’s office. During my 12-week scan, she proudly announced that she was fairly certain we were having a boy. She even went on to boast about her impressive 98% accuracy rate, reinforcing her early prediction. Her certainty was infectious, and it undoubtedly swayed our expectations. I mean, who wouldn’t trust a 98% accuracy rate? This strong hint was so convincing that it subtly influenced my choices, right down to my all-blue outfit for the big day. Little did I know, a delightful twist was awaiting us!

While the initial thought of a grand gender reveal party crossed our minds for a fleeting 30 seconds, we quickly pivoted to a more intimate celebration. We’re always eager for a good photo opportunity, and capturing these precious moments was paramount to us. So, we decided to gather our closest family and friends for a special “finding out” session, expertly documented by the talented Ling Wang. A huge shout-out to Davina and Becca, who were instrumental in managing the balloon situation and ensuring everything went off without a hitch!

Before diving into the thrilling outcome, I must confess something: Jared had a very strong preference for a baby girl as our firstborn. While I would absolutely adore having a daughter, I genuinely felt content with either a boy or a girl for our first. However, the pressure will certainly be on for baby number two! My secret hope is to have one of each in our first two rounds and then, perhaps, consider our family complete. If only it always worked out so perfectly, right? Such is the hopeful planning of expectant parents!

Adding a delightful touch to our gathering, Jared’s Mom created the most adorable DIY mini retro oven. Inside, she placed an array of cupcakes and muffins, serving as a fun guessing game for our guests before the main event. Everyone excitedly placed their bets, and as you can see from the guesses below, the general consensus leaned heavily towards a boy. Why Two Boxes? A Clever Twist on Tradition

If you’re anything like my Dad, you might be wondering, “Are they having twins? What did I miss here? Why are there two boxes?!” While twins would indeed be incredibly cool – especially since Jared himself is a twin – we are actually only expecting one precious little one! The decision to have two boxes was a deliberate one, born from a desire to maximize the excitement for both of us. We both wanted the thrill of opening a box and being part of the discovery.

Most traditional gender reveals involve one box revealing blue and the other pink, creating a scenario where one parent might end up with the “wrong” color. I’ve witnessed many an awkward gender reveal photo where one parent looks slightly confused or disappointed, trying to process what’s happening. To avoid this entirely and ensure double the happiness, I opted for a more inclusive approach: we both received the correct balloon color! This way, neither of us ended up with a “bum box,” and we could both share equally in the surprise and joy of the reveal.

Considering my carefully chosen all-blue outfit, and the ultrasound tech’s confident prediction, I was utterly, insanely surprised to find out we are having a baby girl!!! The shock quickly gave way to an overwhelming wave of excitement, and I instantly burst into tears of pure joy. It was a moment of absolute disbelief and immense happiness.

Watching Jared’s reaction was just as incredible. In that precise moment, I believe he was the happiest man on earth. Behind the Scenes: Our DIY Gender Reveal Decor

For those curious about the DIY elements, Tricia and I poured hours of effort into meticulously painting those massive shapes. I admit, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so we labored over every detail to ensure they were just right. But you have to agree, they turned out pretty spectacular and added such a fun, colorful backdrop to our reveal!

We sourced the large white boxes from The Container Store, which were perfect for holding our secret. For the balloons, we opted for multi-color air-filled balloons from a local party store. This was a crucial step to maintain the element of surprise; by using varied colors, neither we nor our helpers knew which specific color of helium balloons (pink, in our case!) was taped inside each box. This ensured that our genuine reactions were captured without any prior hints. The entire DIY process, though requiring some effort, was incredibly rewarding, and I absolutely adore how all the details came together, creating a truly memorable moment. Well, except for almost giving my Dad a heart attack thinking we were having twins, of course! Haha!
