Newborns, after all, spend their initial months primarily in a bassinet close to their parents, largely indifferent to elaborate decor. Their needs are simple: comfort, security, and proximity to Mom and Dad.

This realization has profoundly influenced our approach to decorating for baby girl number two. Instead of a temporary nursery, we consciously chose to pour our creative energy and resources into designing Gwen’s room as a truly enduring “little girl’s room.” Our goal was to craft a space that not only delighted her as a toddler but would also gracefully evolve with her through her formative years, making it a sustainable and cherished investment. Girls Bedroom Renovation

While selecting the vibrant paint scheme and whimsical decor was undoubtedly the most enjoyable part of this project, we faced a significant undertaking before we could even begin those creative choices. Looking back at the initial photo of Gwen’s room when we first purchased this house, it’s hard to believe it was taken during daylight hours! The room was perpetually shrouded in an oppressive darkness, feeling perpetually dim and unwelcoming.

Our comprehensive renovation journey for the entire house commenced last November, and we’ve certainly transformed dramatically since then. The first crucial step in Gwen’s room, orchestrated by our dedicated construction team, Genesis CP, involved stripping away the old, tired carpet. In its place, we installed the beautiful and luminous Stuga Studio Elderflower flooring, which instantly began to lift the room’s spirits. Concurrently, we undertook the demolition of the rather odd and obstructive built-in structures that cluttered the space, paving the way for a more open, functional, and aesthetically pleasing layout. This foundational work was essential in laying the groundwork for the bright, cheerful haven it is today.

How to Brighten Up a Room

The immediate impact of removing the old, dark carpet was profound; it undeniably brought a tremendous amount of brightness to the space. However, even with the new flooring, we were still working with a single, rather small window that offered limited natural light. Our vision for Gwen’s room was one of abundant sunshine and airy cheerfulness, so we knew we needed to take more dramatic steps to truly illuminate the space.

To maximize the influx of natural light, we embarked on a significant architectural enhancement: the installation of a state-of-the-art Velux solar-powered, fresh-air skylight. This addition proved to be a game-changer, flooding the room with an incredible amount of daylight that we hadn’t thought possible. A crucial feature of this skylight is its integrated room-darkening shade – an absolute necessity for those precious nap times! The thrill of seeing Gwen’s room bathed in natural light for the very first time was truly unforgettable. We also adore the modern convenience of being able to open the skylight via a smartphone app, allowing fresh air to circulate throughout the room, creating a more invigorating and pleasant atmosphere.

In addition to the skylight, Genesis CP replaced the original small window with a significantly larger picture window, effectively doubling the light intake from that side of the room. The installation of the skylight meant we had to bid farewell to the existing ceiling fan. To compensate for this and provide ample, evenly distributed light, we opted for four discreet recessed lights, ensuring the room remains well-lit and inviting even after the sun sets. These strategic lighting modifications completely transformed the room from a dark corner into a luminous and joyful space.

This brilliant white base not only allowed the vivid trend colors to truly pop but also ensured that the room felt expansive, clean, and never overwhelming despite its rich palette. We managed to purchase the main bed frame and all the necessary DIY supplies for a total investment of approximately $500, proving that a bespoke, high-impact piece doesn’t have to break the bank.
