Once you have your cardstock template, place it onto your cork sheets and trace around its perimeter with a pen. Repeat this step for as many coasters as you wish to make.
Cut Out the Cork Hexagons: With the hexagon shapes traced onto your cork, it’s time to cut them out. Using your scalpel or craft knife and a cutting mat, carefully cut along the traced lines. Precision is key here! A sharp blade is absolutely crucial; a dull blade will tear the cork and result in rough, uneven edges. If your blade starts to drag or create fuzzy edges, replace it immediately. Repeat this step for each coaster until you have a stack of perfectly cut cork hexagons.
Mask Off the First Section for Painting: This is where the geometric magic begins! Take your washi tape and mask off one-third of the hexagon. To achieve the correct triangular section, position the tape from one outer point of the hexagon, extending towards the exact center, and then to an adjacent outer point. You can visually estimate the middle, or if you prefer absolute precision, gently mark the center point of the hexagon before applying the tape. Refer to the provided photos for a clear visual guide on tape placement.
Paint the First Color: With your first geometric section perfectly taped out, it’s time to apply your chosen craft paint. Paint the exposed third of the hexagon evenly. For a truly vibrant and opaque color, you will most likely need to apply two coats of paint. The key to a smooth finish is patience: allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second. This prevents smudging and ensures rich, consistent color.
Mask and Paint the Second Color: Once the first painted section is completely dry, carefully remove the washi tape. Now, mask out an adjacent one-third section of the hexagon using fresh washi tape. The trick here is to ensure that each color “flows” into the next in a visually cohesive manner. If you maintain the continuity of the angles (e.g., keeping one color on the “left” side and another on the “right” side of the central point), your colors will fit together perfectly when the coasters are arranged. For instance, in our example, we kept the peach on the left and the orange on the right. Just like before, apply two coats of your second color, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly between applications.
Reveal Your Masterpiece: After the second color is totally dry, gently peel away the remaining washi tape. And just like that, you’ve created a beautiful new set of geometric, tessellating coasters! The sharp, clean lines and contrasting colors will truly pop. Repeat this process for all your cork hexagons.
Optional: Apply a Protective Sealer: For optimal protection against moisture and wear, consider applying a coat of clear matte Mod Podge or any other water-based sealant. Geometric DIY Cork Coasters – Project Summary

These easy geometric coaster tutorials are perfect for a quick and easy DIY project that adds a personalized touch to your home decor or makes a thoughtful gift!

Materials

2 craft paint in 2 colors or mix your own
Cork tiles at least 1/4″ thick
Cardstock
PDF template download the link for a free template
Mod Podge or any water base sealer optional

Instructions

Print out the hexagon template PDF onto the cardstock and cut out the shape. Then, trace the hexagon onto the cork sheets.
Using the scalpel/craft knife, cut out the hexagons. Repeat this step for each coaster. Make sure the blade is sharp or otherwise you’ll get rough edges.
With the washi tape, mask off an area that’s equivalent to a third of the hexagon, taking the tape from the outer points to the inner point. If you prefer, measure where the middle is to start. Refer to the how-to photos for reference.
Once you’ve taped out your shape, start painting the third of the hexagon that’s exposed. You will more than likely need two coats of paint to get a vibrant color. Just make sure you leave each coat to dry before applying the next.
Once the paint is dry, remove the tape. Then, mask out another third with some more tape. Make sure that each color stays on the same side of the shape so that the colors fit together perfectly when you have the coasters all together. We painted the left peach and the right side orange. Again, you’ll probably need 2 coats of paint.
Once the paint is dry, peel away the second lot of tape. Repeat for each coaster. And now you have a set of new coasters!
Optional: For extra protection, apply a coat of clear matte Mod Podge.
