One Room Challenge Week 3: Townhouse Master Bedroom Design Plan

Another week has flown by in the exhilarating whirlwind of the One Room Challenge (ORC)! It truly feels like just yesterday I was sharing our initial plans, and here we are, already at Week 3. This week, as part of the One Room Challenge, I’m thrilled to unveil the much-anticipated design blueprint for our master bedroom.

Embarking on a renovation journey, especially within the tight timeline of the ORC, always brings its share of last-minute decisions and evolving ideas. While I’m still meticulously refining the smaller decorative details, this post will offer a comprehensive overview of the major elements and the overarching aesthetic we’re striving for. The anticipation of seeing this vision transform from concept to reality is truly electrifying, particularly when recalling the rather shocking state of the master bedroom before we began. Our goal is to create a space that not only looks stunning but also functions as a serene retreat, a true sanctuary.

A Sanctuary of Light and Style: Our Master Bedroom Vision

When it came to conceptualizing the master bedroom design, my paramount concern was maintaining an abundance of light and an airy atmosphere. As someone who already enjoys a deep sleep, and with a baby soon to arrive, I knew that maximizing natural brightness and creating a peaceful environment was crucial for optimizing rest – lest I descend into full “zombie dead animal status,” as I like to joke! While we’re largely retaining the existing furniture layout to ensure optimal flow and practicality, I was resolute in my desire for the space to feel completely rejuvenated and distinct from its previous iteration. This transformation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about crafting a mood, an experience.

The featured design mockup (above) beautifully illustrates the core of our vision, particularly as you gaze directly towards the bed. Our foundational palette begins with Sherwin Williams Extra White adorning all the walls. This choice wasn’t arbitrary; it’s the consistent white we’ve employed throughout our home, ensuring a seamless and harmonious flow between living spaces. This crisp, clean white provides the perfect canvas, allowing other design elements to truly pop. To introduce a focal point and infuse personality, we’re creating a striking wallpapered accent wall exclusively behind our bed. This strategic placement will instantly elevate the room, drawing the eye and adding a layer of sophisticated texture and pattern.

Thoughtful Foundations: Flooring and Rugs

Beneath it all, we’ve laid down beautiful variable widths autumn hickory engineered wood flooring by Pergo from Lowe’s. Engineered wood offers the best of both worlds: the timeless beauty of hardwood with enhanced durability and stability, making it an excellent choice for a high-traffic area like a master bedroom. It brings warmth and natural texture to the base of the room, grounding the entire design.

Adding another layer of character and comfort, we’re excitedly bringing back this beloved Nuloom distressed abstract oriental rug from Overstock. This rug, which caused quite a stir when I used it in another room last year, is truly a showstopper. Its vibrant, multi-color abstract pattern injects a lively, artistic energy into the space, perfectly complementing our “unorthodox” color scheme. Since we recently acquired a stunning new rug for our living room makeover, this treasured piece is making its triumphant return upstairs, replacing our current bedroom rug and bringing with it a sense of continuity and cherished familiarity.

Functional Elegance: The Opposite Wall’s Design

Turning our attention to the wall opposite the bed, this area is designed for both practical utility and sophisticated style. It will house a credenza, an inviting accent chair, a chic laundry hamper, and of course, the television. I am absolutely obsessed with the idea of owning one of the Samsung The Frame TV’s. This groundbreaking technology allows the television to seamlessly transform into a piece of art when not in use, displaying stunning artwork or personal photos. When you desire, it functions just like any other cutting-edge smart TV. This innovation is literally all my TV dreams come true – a sleek, integrated solution that banishes the unsightly black rectangle that often disrupts bedroom aesthetics. Whether this dream piece makes it into the final install or not, its presence in the design mockup is undeniably aspirational!

Underneath the TV, a solid wood mid-century console from Overstock will provide both storage and a touch of timeless design. Its clean lines and warm wood tone will add depth and sophistication. Complementing this, an Elle Pink Velvet Accent Chair from Overstock will introduce a luxurious texture and a playful pop of color, creating a cozy reading nook or a spot for contemplation. Even utilitarian items like the Safavieh Wellington Rattan Navy Storage Hamper have been selected to enhance the overall aesthetic, proving that practicality can absolutely be stylish.

An Unorthodox Yet Harmonious Color Scheme

Our general color scheme might strike some as a bit “unorthodox” for a master bedroom, but it perfectly encapsulates our personal style. The entire palette is inspired by the captivating hues found in this stunning marble print from Overstock and the enchanting mint and gold Ferm Living wallpaper. These pieces serve as our guiding stars, dictating a vibrant yet sophisticated blend of colors. We’re weaving in touches of deep navy and rich emerald green, creating an unexpected but utterly cohesive blend. Far from feeling stuffy or overly formal, this combination is designed to feel fresh, modern, and deeply personal – a true reflection of us, especially in a space where we spend a significant portion of our daily lives.

The Art of Placement: Solving the Artwork Dilemma

One of the design elements I’m grappling with most is the artwork placement, particularly over the bed. Is it too simplistic to opt for one large print, or would two smaller, side-by-side prints create a more dynamic look? Currently, we have a medium-sized print above the bed, and it feels somewhat undersized and a bit lost in the space, which certainly contributes to my indecision. The challenge lies in filling that blank canvas without overwhelming the calming ambiance of the room. Perhaps a gallery wall, or a combination of various textures and sizes?
