Where We Stayed in New Braunfels
Our search for the perfect family accommodation led us to the delightful Cation on the Guadalupe, an incredibly charming and stylish boutique aparthotel. Situated just a mile from the bustling heart of New Braunfels, this hidden gem offered the ideal blend of tranquility and convenience. The Cation immediately captivated us with its unique aesthetic, a harmonious fusion of mid-century hotel design and a retro Texas ranch vibe. Each room boasts its own distinct theme, creating a personalized and inviting atmosphere for guests. The added bonus? Direct walking access to the serene Guadalupe River, where you can easily dip your toes in or relax under an umbrella, immersing yourself in nature’s embrace.
Traveling with children means navigating a fair amount of luggage and the need for ample space. The Cation on the Guadalupe proved to be exceptionally family-friendly, offering spacious kitchens, multiple bathrooms, and generous living areas that comfortably accommodated our crew and all our travel essentials. This made meal preparation and relaxation much easier after a day of exploring. Beyond the comfortable interiors, the property spans 4.5 acres, providing abundant opportunities for our girls to engage in nature exploration. From chasing butterflies to discovering local flora, the expansive grounds offered endless entertainment and a chance to truly connect with the outdoors.
Despite being just minutes from the city center, the Cation on the Guadalupe felt wonderfully secluded and peaceful. It truly embodied an idyllic and relaxing retreat, making it a place one could easily imagine calling home. The combination of serene natural surroundings and convenient access to downtown New Braunfels made it an unparalleled choice for our stay. Moreover, its close proximity to fantastic shopping and dining options, which we are about to delve into, perfectly rounded out our experience. Lark painstakingly restored an old 1850s farmstead and ingeniously built the modern gallery around it, creating a “house within a house” concept that is both visually stunning and historically resonant. This innovative design allows visitors to appreciate the original structure while exploring a vast collection of artifacts. We even brought along our family coin collection for Lark to appraise, transforming our visit into our very own “Antiques Roadshow” session! He graciously took the time to meticulously review each coin, offering us a miniature lesson on the intricate factors that determine both monetary and emotional value in historical items. While our coins didn’t yield a “crazy rich” revelation, the experience was invaluable, deepening our understanding and appreciation for historical artifacts. While we immersed ourselves in the world of antiques, our daughters enjoyed a visit to the nearby local train museum, ensuring everyone had an engaging and educational experience.

1 — Krause’s Cafe
Upon our arrival in New Braunfels, the girls were understandably restless after being cooped up in the car. Our immediate priority was to find a place where they could stretch their legs and play, while we enjoyed a satisfying meal. Krause’s Cafe immediately came to mind, highly recommended for its expansive outdoor beer garden – a perfect solution for energetic kids. This historic establishment is a beloved local institution, renowned not only for its family-friendly atmosphere but also as a popular destination for live music on Friday nights, adding a vibrant energy to the evening. Krause’s Cafe beautifully embodies New Braunfels’ German-Texan roots, offering a menu that celebrates both culinary traditions.
During our visit, we indulged in a delightful beer flight, sampling a selection of distinct Hill Country craft beers, each offering a unique taste of the local brewing scene. The food was equally impressive; our favorite bites included their perfectly baked pretzels, served warm and soft, and the schnitzel. We tried and shared all three delicious versions of their schnitzel, each prepared with authentic German flair and a Texan twist. Beyond these favorites, Krause’s Cafe offers a full menu featuring traditional German dishes like bratwurst, sauerbraten, and strudel, alongside classic American comfort food. The lively atmosphere, combined with delicious food and refreshing local brews, made Krause’s Cafe the ideal first food destination in New Braunfels, offering something enjoyable for every member of the family.
2 — 2Tarts Bakery
For breakfast or a delightful sweet treat, 2Tarts Bakery quickly became our go-to spot in New Braunfels. This charming bakery is a local favorite, known for its extensive selection of both savory and sweet breakfast items, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving. Given New Braunfels’ strong German-Texan heritage, we couldn’t resist ordering the “Pig in the Poncho,” their delicious Southern take on a traditional kolache – a savory pastry that perfectly encapsulates the fusion of local cultures. Each bite was a delightful revelation, a testament to the bakery’s innovative approach to classic comfort food. 2Tarts Bakery is a true family affair, founded and run by two incredibly talented sisters who pour their heart and soul into every scratch-made creation. Even their mom and husbands contribute to the warm, welcoming atmosphere, making it feel like a home away from home.
You might even recognize one of the sisters, Ashley, from her television appearances, including her triumph as a winner on the Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge. Her expertise and creativity are evident in every pastry, cake, and cookie. We were especially impressed by their commitment to inclusivity, offering a wide array of gluten-free and vegan options, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their delicious treats. Gazing at the dazzling display in their patisserie case, it’s impossible not to want to try everything! We couldn’t leave without grabbing some rich dark chocolate ganache eclairs and extra cookies for the girls, which were their undeniable favorites, to enjoy back at our hotel. 2Tarts Bakery is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s an experience of heartfelt hospitality, exquisite baking, and a true taste of New Braunfels’ sweet side.
3 — Gristmill River Restaurant
For a taste of true Southern comfort food steeped in history, the Gristmill River Restaurant is an absolute New Braunfels institution, having been a beloved staple for over 45 years. Located in the historic Gruene district, within a restored 1878 cotton gin, this restaurant offers not just a meal, but an authentic Texan experience. Its multi-level layout provides versatile dining options to suit any occasion. You can opt for a casual and lively outing in the outdoor beer garden, which we chose for its relaxed vibe and cocktail offerings, perfect for unwinding. Alternatively, step inside for a more intimate date night, surrounded by the rustic charm and historical ambiance of the old mill. The Gristmill is celebrated for its generous portions and classic Southern fare, making it the definitive place to satisfy your cravings.
If you’re seeking genuine Southern dishes, the Gristmill delivers with its hearty chicken fried steak, perfectly golden fried catfish, and Texas-sized sandwiches that are guaranteed to leave you satisfied. Each dish is prepared with a commitment to traditional flavors, ensuring an authentic taste of the region. Beyond the food, the Gristmill’s location offers stunning views of the Guadalupe River, adding to the overall charm and making it a picturesque spot to enjoy your meal. Looking ahead, we’re already planning a return trip to New Braunfels without the kids, eager to explore more adult-oriented activities like touring the beautiful Dry Comal Creek Vineyards, one of many fantastic New Braunfels wineries, and experiencing the thrill of zip-lining. It’s truly wonderful how New Braunfels caters to all ages and occasions, offering a diverse range of activities and experiences. Our weekend getaway was ultimately a relaxing and fulfilling escape, precisely what we had hoped for, and we can’t wait to discover even more of what this versatile Texas gem has to offer.
