Metropolitan Cathedral – This magnificent edifice, a cornerstone of Mexico City’s historic center, is an absolute must-see. Its grand scale and intricate details are breathtaking, reflecting centuries of history and art. We recommend visiting on a weekday, as weekend crowds can be overwhelming, detracting from the serene experience. After marveling at the Cathedral, take time to wander through the surrounding area, which buzzes with small shops, street vendors, and tourists. From here, it’s also a pleasant walk to the impressive Downtown Hotel Mexico, where you can admire its famous vertical garden restaurant.

Casa Luis Barragán – For architecture enthusiasts and design lovers, a visit to Casa Luis Barragán is nothing short of a pilgrimage. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the former home and studio of the celebrated Mexican architect Luis Barragán and is an extraordinary example of emotional architecture. Tours are highly exclusive, often limited to groups of 5-7 people once a day, and reservations are absolutely essential – we recommend booking three to four weeks in advance. We regrettably didn’t plan far enough ahead and even a playful attempt at bribing our way in proved unsuccessful! While a special trek to this part of town without confirmed entry might not be worth it, the surrounding streets do boast a plethora of colorful walls and charming aesthetics that make for great photo opportunities.

Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) – Stepping into the Frida Kahlo Museum, or Casa Azul (The Blue House), is like entering the vibrant, poignant world of one of Mexico’s most iconic artists. Located in the charming Coyoacán neighborhood, this museum is Frida Kahlo’s former home and a deep dive into her life, art, and inspirations. To avoid the infamous queues, visit on a weekday when it’s generally less crowded and tickets can be slightly cheaper. Don’t forget your camera – an additional fee of about $60 pesos allows you to capture the stunning interiors and vibrant courtyards. Crucially, purchase your tickets online in advance; they limit entry to 145 people at a time, making walk-in waits notoriously long.

National Museum of Anthropology – Widely considered one of the finest museums in the world, the National Museum of Anthropology is an architectural marvel housing an unparalleled collection of ancient Mexican artifacts. Admission is incredibly affordable, offering immense value for a full day of exploration. Situated within the sprawling Chapultepec Park, it’s conveniently located next to the Museum of Modern Art, allowing for a leisurely stroll between the two cultural institutions. After immersing yourself in art and history, a short, picturesque walk through a tunnel will lead you to the luxurious Four Seasons for a well-deserved cocktail.

Museo Jumex – Even if contemporary art isn’t your primary interest, Museo Jumex is worth a visit simply for its striking architectural design. The building itself is a masterpiece, making for fantastic photographs from the outside. When we visited, a captivating Jeff Koons gold balloon exhibit graced the front plaza, adding an extra layer of visual intrigue. The museum’s sleek, modern aesthetic stands in stark contrast to the historic charm of other parts of the city, offering a refreshing contemporary art experience.

Mexico City’s culinary scene is nothing short of world-class, and Condesa offers a tantalizing array of dining experiences. From chic restaurants to cozy cafes, here’s a taste of where we satisfied our cravings:

Romita Comedor – This place is an absolute gem, as pictured above! Tucked away in an unassuming building, a doorman guides you inside to a spiral staircase that feels straight out of a whimsical novel, leading up to a stunning sixth-floor dining room. The space is a design marvel, featuring an incredible greenhouse window and an elegant black and white theme that creates a sophisticated yet airy ambiance. The journey there is also part of the charm, as you’ll pass several cute shops and bakeries on your stroll from Mercado Roma. Be advised, the food here is definitely specialty, crafted with unique flavors and artistic presentation. If you’re seeking a simple meal, you might want to dine elsewhere first. Also, plan for a leisurely experience, as service can be slow; it’s the perfect spot for savoring cocktails and conversation.

Licorería Limantour – Regularly named among the world’s top bars, Limantour is an essential stop for cocktail aficionados. It boasts a distinctively moody and sophisticated atmosphere, particularly on the ground floor. However, the upstairs bar is a vibrant contrast, offering a super cute and lively setting with fantastic views overlooking the bustling street below. Their menus are legendary – true works of art in themselves – showcasing innovative and impeccably crafted libations. It’s a place to see and be seen, and certainly to enjoy some of the most creative cocktails Mexico City has to offer.

Casa Virginia – We regrettably missed the opportunity to dine at Casa Virginia, a true shame given its stellar reputation and breathtaking decor. You’ll likely pass it on your way to Romita Comedor or Limantour. This exquisite restaurant is known for its elegant ambiance and refined cuisine, but it operates with specific hours on certain days, so checking ahead is crucial. Numerous recommendations highlighted it as a must-try for its exceptional food and stunning interior design, making it a prime spot for a special dining experience.

Lalo! – Prepare yourself for one of the MOST delicious breakfast experiences of your life at Lalo! My order of bacon and eggs on sourdough was not just a meal; it was a culinary revelation, looking and tasting 120 times more magical than I could have ever imagined. Before your main course arrives, they enchantingly circulate with a tray of fresh pastries. Naturally, I couldn’t resist the chocolate donut – because, really, why would you? The vibrant, casual atmosphere paired with truly outstanding food makes Lalo! an unmissable morning destination.

Beyond its culinary delights and cultural landmarks, Mexico City offers a vibrant shopping scene and unique places to simply soak in the local atmosphere. Here are some of our favorite discoveries for retail therapy and unique experiences:

Mercado Del Carmen – This “super cute” spot is easily identified by its distinctive giant blue building. Inside, you’ll discover a curated collection of modern, beautifully designed shops offering everything from artisanal goods to gourmet treats. We indulged in a slice of birthday cake from the bakery, found unique gold cups and utensils at a home goods store, and enjoyed a refreshing beer sampler in the back. A huge bonus: they offer excellent free Wi-Fi. Don’t miss heading upstairs to explore the charming open-air garden, a perfect spot for a moment of tranquility amidst your shopping spree.

Mercado Roma – A trendy gastronomic market, Mercado Roma is a paradise for foodies. We delighted in sampling exquisite chocolates by Quo Bo while leisurely strolling with a cocktail in hand. The fresh-made churros were an absolute treat, and we couldn’t resist the temptation of delicate macarons. The market’s vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings make it a fantastic place to sample local and international flavors, discover unique gourmet products, and simply enjoy the lively ambiance.

Mercado San Juan – For adventurous foodies, Mercado San Juan is a must-visit. This bustling market is renowned for its exotic meats and specialty ingredients, from venison and wild boar to insects and rare seafood. Numerous locals recommended it to us as a truly unique culinary experience. It’s a fascinating place to explore if you’re looking to expand your palate and witness a vibrant side of Mexico City’s gastronomic culture.

San Angel Saturday Market – If you appreciate handcrafted goods and unique artistry, make sure to carve out time for the San Angel Saturday Market. This charming artisan market comes alive every Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm, offering a fantastic array of jewelry, textiles, ceramics, paintings, and other creative works. The atmosphere is vibrant and inspiring, providing a wonderful opportunity to find authentic souvenirs and support local artists. Its limited operating hours mean careful planning is essential to fit it into your itinerary.

Downtown Hotel Mexico (Home of the Vertical Garden) – More than just a hotel, Downtown Hotel Mexico is an urban oasis and a cultural hub. Its most iconic feature is the breathtaking vertical garden, a lush green wall that transforms a side of the building into a living work of art. You can dine at the hotel’s restaurant right alongside this incredible botanical display, creating a truly memorable ambiance. The first and second floors of the hotel are also home to an eclectic collection of local shops, offering everything from designer clothing to unique gifts, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and discovery.
