We also had the immense pleasure of staying in an oceanfront villa, which, if your budget allows, is worth every single penny. These villas aren’t just rooms; they’re private sanctuaries. Each comes fully equipped with a supremely comfortable hammock perfect for afternoon naps, a fully stocked bar featuring name-brand spirits, and even a second bathroom – details that truly elevate the experience and can be a significant deciding factor for those seeking ultimate comfort and convenience.

If your idea of a perfect vacation involves vibrant, wild nightlife, then the Exumas might not be your primary destination. However, if you’re seeking a serene, laid-back environment paired with ample opportunities for relaxation and gentle adventure, it’s absolutely ideal. Sandals Emerald Bay offers a plethora of activities, from diverse restaurants catering to every palate and a variety of water sports, to simply lounging by one of their magnificent pools. They even boast a designated “serenity area” pool, where the only background music is the gentle lapping of waves – a haven for peace-seekers (though you’re certainly welcome to enjoy your personal Bieber playlist on headphones!).

For those moments when a slight adrenaline boost is desired, fear not! You can channel your inner Mario Kart character by finding one of the giant floating tricycles and attempting to pedal it around for a solid half-hour. It’s not the easiest workout, but it promises a good laugh and a unique way to experience the crystal-clear waters. During our leisurely days lounging by the pool, we were fortunate enough to meet some wonderful new friends, Mark and Kelly. We even ended up on the same excursion and, true to form, coerced them into recreating some classic “Titanic” poses on the beach. It seems escaping a photo-op is impossible when you’re friends with us!

The only minor drawback I encountered on the island was the tenacious local insect population. They seemed to have a particular fondness for me, and even with liberal applications of bug spray, they managed to make their presence known. However, would I return despite the bug bites? Absolutely, without a moment’s hesitation!

Our stay lasted only four nights, but in hindsight, I’d strongly recommend a minimum of five. We felt we barely scratched the surface of all the Exumas have to offer in that timeframe, managing just one incredibly necessary excursion: a visit to the famous swimming pigs.

I won’t lie; as our boat approached these not-so-little darlings in the crystal-clear water, I thought I might actually fall overboard with sheer excitement! These incredible creatures are even more charming in person than in pictures. A fair warning, though, and something nobody typically mentions: after about 15 people have been feeding them consistently for 20 minutes, nature calls. It’s a minor detail in the grand scheme of such a unique experience, but managing expectations is key!

It also turns out that I was a tiny bit intimidated by them once I was actually in the water. These pigs are substantial in size, and their enthusiasm for food means they don’t have much of a “braking” mechanism when food is dangled before them. However, once I retreated to shallower waters, the experience became much more comfortable and enjoyable. For those planning a visit, it’s worth noting there are actually two different islands home to swimming pigs in the Exumas. Depending on the timing of your visit to each, you might even be lucky enough to see adorable baby piglets! Our particular excursion wasn’t through Island Routes, Sandals’ partner company, and in hindsight, I almost wish we’d tried both. The Island Routes tour is often shorter, cutting down on travel time, which could be beneficial for some travelers.

Beyond the Pigs: A Full-Day Island Hopping Adventure with Four C’s

The excursion we chose was a full-day adventure with Four C’s. While it was a considerable journey – around 172 miles round trip if memory serves – it was an absolutely epic experience. We embarked on a high-speed boat that navigated a significant portion of the breathtaking cays stretching between Great Exuma and Nassau, offering unparalleled views and diverse activities.

One of the most ridiculously awesome stops was a vast, pristine sandbar in the middle of the sea. It was a dream come true, allowing us to walk what felt like endlessly in any direction, with the water barely reaching our waist.
We ventured to Iguana Cay, where we had the unique opportunity to feed the resident iguanas, observing these fascinating reptiles in their natural habitat.
For the more adventurous, a swim with docile nurse sharks offered an exhilarating yet safe encounter with marine life.
And finally, we snorkeled in the legendary underwater cave known as Thunderball Grotto, famously featured in the James Bond movie “007, Thunderball,” an experience that felt straight out of a film.

Aside from the unique encounter with the swimming pigs, that magnificent sandbar truly stole the show and made dreams come true. The sheer expanse of perfectly clear, shallow water stretched as far as the eye could see in every direction. It was a truly surreal sensation to walk out so far into the ocean and still have the water barely reach your waist. It was crazy awesome and an absolute photographer’s paradise!
