While the ideal scenario often involves a separate room exclusively dedicated to office work, the reality for many, including ourselves, is a perpetual blurring of the lines between professional and personal life. Consequently, hybrid workspaces have become increasingly prevalent, seamlessly integrating into living rooms, master bedrooms, and, in this particular case, a guest room.
Designing our latest home office presented a unique set of challenges, though seasoned renovators know that every project comes with its own set of hurdles. Our previous office space afforded us the luxury of high ceilings, abundant natural light, and generous dimensions. Even our townhouse study room benefited from its own secluded nook within the home. However, this most recent makeover required a more ingenious approach due to its significant spatial limitations. Despite the initial constraints, this project blossomed into one of our most beloved home office ideas, proving that thoughtful design can triumph over spatial restrictions and create truly inspiring environments.
The Before and Our Vision: Crafting a Balanced Office Bedroom
Before its transformation, the room felt disjointed—a bedroom with a desk unceremoniously tucked into a corner, an obvious afterthought rather than an integrated design element. Our primary goal was to create an office bedroom that harmoniously blended both a highly functional workspace and a serene sleep sanctuary, ensuring neither function overshadowed the other. Achieving this delicate balance in a small, narrow, rectangular “railroad” layout proved to be quite intricate.
Natural light was also a significant concern. Much of the room suffered from dim lighting, yet paradoxically, the area directly in front of the window received a harsh, intense glare. These contrasting lighting conditions required strategic planning to create a uniformly comfortable environment. However, the inherent advantage of a guest bedroom lies in its design flexibility. Unlike a primary bedroom, it’s not used every day, allowing for more adventurous and playful design choices. Since this particular room was intended for someone in a creative industry, there were no strict limitations on maintaining a “subtle professional” backdrop for video calls. This freedom encouraged us to pursue an extreme transformation, ultimately turning it into a vibrant emerald green bedroom that defies conventional expectations.
Creating Impact with a Temporary Wallpaper Accent Wall
To inject instant personality and drama into the space, we opted for a striking accent wall, beautifully realized with floral peel and stick wallpaper. This modern solution is renowned for its user-friendliness; with an adhesive backing, it’s literally a matter of peeling off the protective layer and sticking the wallpaper to the wall. This makes it an ideal choice for a weekend DIY project, easily transforming a room without the commitment or mess of traditional wallpaper.
The temporary nature of peel and stick wallpaper is another significant advantage. It’s perfect for renters who want to personalize their space without permanent alterations, or for homeowners who enjoy refreshing their decor frequently. If you’re seeking a truly dramatic and impactful change, a quirky, bold wallpaper design like ours is an excellent route to take. Complementing the new accent wall, we bid farewell to the bland beige walls and painted the remaining surfaces a cohesive, matching green. This continuity creates a unified and immersive atmosphere, further enhancing the emerald green theme. You can easily achieve this sophisticated color coordination by taking a wallpaper sample to your local paint store for a precise color match.
Strategic Design: How to Make a Room Appear Taller and More Spacious
In smaller rooms, creating the illusion of height can dramatically enhance the perception of overall space. Here are our tried-and-true methods for achieving this effect:
1 — Raise the Curtains
One of the simplest yet most effective tricks is to hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible. This draws the eye upward, making the walls appear taller and the windows grander than they actually are. We’ve successfully utilized this technique numerous times, in projects like our transitional living room and emerald green bedroom makeovers, consistently delivering impressive results.
2 — Opt for Vertical Design Elements
Incorporating vertical design elements naturally guides the eye’s pathway up and down, reinforcing the sense of height. This can be achieved through subtle choices such as ripple fold curtains, sleek vertical sconces, or even stripe throw pillows. For this project, we also strategically selected wallpaper featuring a distinct vertical pattern, which significantly contributed to the room’s perceived height and added to its visual interest. These vertical lines create an elongating effect, making the entire space feel more open and airy.
Selecting a New Functional Office Desk: The Heart of the Hybrid Space
For our office bedroom, the selection of a new desk was paramount; it needed to be both practical and highly functional. While we initially considered a standing desk for ergonomic benefits, our ultimate decision favored a piece that offered extensive storage. The primary motivation was the ability to neatly conceal and organize office supplies and electronic cords, transforming the workspace into a seamless part of the bedroom whenever guests were present. This ensures a clean, clutter-free environment that promotes relaxation.
The Kelly Collection Media Desk proved to be the perfect fit for this office bedroom setup. This remarkably stylish desk performs not just double, but quadruple duty, functioning simultaneously as a TV stand, a dresser, a bookcase, and, of course, a computer desk. Its multifaceted design is crucial for maximizing utility in a compact space. While maneuvering this substantial furniture piece to fit perfectly required some strategic adjustments, the effort was undeniably worthwhile for the functionality it brought. To further soften its appearance and make it feel less like a traditional office fixture, we adorned it with decorative accessories and elegant candles. Critically, moving the desk out of the confined corner and into a more prominent, balanced position significantly contributed to the room’s harmonious work-life equilibrium, making it feel less like a workspace imposed on a bedroom and more like an integral part of a thoughtfully designed space.
Optimizing Lighting for a Small Home Office and Bedroom Space
Given that this hybrid space functions as both an office and a bedroom, lighting played a crucial role in creating a versatile and inviting atmosphere. Recognizing that the room wasn’t adequately lit at night, we implemented the three-point lighting method—a foundational interior design principle—to ensure comprehensive illumination and mood control.
Our general overhead lighting was provided by an updated ceiling fixture. We replaced the old unit with the Hepburn Light Fan, which boasts a dimmable function, allowing us to precisely control the ambiance, whether for focused work or relaxed unwinding. This ceiling light fan is a personal favorite, having also been installed in our lakeside living room, speaking to its versatility and aesthetic appeal.
For accent lighting, we installed elegant brass sconces on either side of the bed. These particular fixtures offer flexibility as they can be plugged in or hardwired for a seamless, cordless appearance, contributing to a cleaner aesthetic. To address task lighting requirements, we selected a modern metal desk lamp, strategically positioned on the desk. Furthermore, to maximize natural light and create the illusion of a larger space, we hung the Arch Mirror adjacent to the window, allowing it to reflect sunlight deeper into the room. This layered lighting approach ensures the space is well-lit for any activity, enhancing both functionality and comfort.
Decorating Our Bedroom Home Office: Blending Styles Seamlessly
The patterned wallpaper we selected is inherently bold, making it a powerful accent wall on its own. However, given its distinctly feminine and vintage floral design, we aimed to introduce elements that would balance the room’s aesthetic with a modern and contemporary edge. To achieve this, we transformed the accent wall into a dynamic gallery wall, showcasing abstract, minimalist artwork that juxtaposes beautifully with the intricate wallpaper pattern. This fusion of styles creates visual depth and interest.
On the opposite side of the room, a large, bare green wall presented another decorating opportunity. Installing a second gallery wall might have made the room feel overly cluttered and busy, which we wanted to avoid in a small space. Instead, we commissioned an abstract art piece painted specifically for the room, incorporating the same pink, green, and navy color scheme found in the wallpaper. This custom artwork elegantly ties the room’s color palette together, providing a cohesive yet distinct focal point that prevents the space from feeling overwhelmed. To further enhance comfort and inject another layer of coziness, and because we’re not fond of plain beige carpet, we chose a checkered rug. This rug not only covers a significant portion of the floor but also harmonizes with the existing carpet, creating a soft landing and adding textural richness without clashing.
