During our last visit, we had the pleasure of staying at The Dunmore, a truly exquisite property situated directly on the famous pink sand beach. Beyond its prime location, the hotel itself is a marvel of elegant design and offers truly delicious culinary experiences. However, it’s important to set expectations: if you’re accustomed to all-inclusive resorts, Harbour Island presents a different, more independent style of vacation. None of the island’s premier hotels offer all-inclusive packages. Instead, the island encourages exploration, with a diverse array of local restaurants and charming eateries awaiting your discovery.

Navigating Harbour Island is an experience in itself. The island is small and wonderfully walkable, making it easy to stroll or bike to most destinations, allowing you to soak in the charming surroundings. For those days when you might prefer a quicker pace, or perhaps a break from the sun or a sprinkle of rain, golf carts are the primary mode of transportation. Renting a golf cart is a popular and convenient way to traverse the island, giving you the freedom to explore every nook and cranny at your leisure. We highly recommend stopping here on your first night to grab drinks and mixers. This simple tip can lead to significant savings on beverages throughout your trip, allowing you to allocate more of your budget to trying diverse local dishes.

What To Pack for Harbour Island

Packing smart can significantly enhance your Harbour Island experience, helping you navigate the island efficiently and enjoyably. Here’s a list of essential items to consider bringing:

1 — Cash

While most establishments on Harbour Island accept credit cards, cash remains king for specific, crucial transactions. There is indeed one ATM available at the island bank, but it’s always wise to arrive with a good amount of USD cash in small denominations. You’ll definitely need cash for the inter-island transfers: the taxi from Eleuthera airport to the ferry, and the subsequent water taxi to Harbour Island, as well as any short taxi rides to your accommodation. Having cash on hand simplifies these initial steps of your journey and ensures a smooth start to your vacation.

2 — Passport

As The Bahamas is an international destination, a valid passport is absolutely essential for all visitors. Don’t worry about lengthy airport procedures; the airport on Eleuthera features a small, efficient “customs” room (approximately 4×6 feet) where processing is typically super quick and easy, getting you through immigration without hassle so you can start enjoying your vacation almost immediately.

3 — Baby Oil & Bug Spray

While Harbour Island isn’t heavily plagued by mosquitoes (and notably, there’s no Zika reported), it is home to tiny, almost invisible biting insects known as “no-see-ums.” As their name suggests, these minuscule creatures are notoriously difficult to spot. For some, their bites can cause quite an itchy reaction, though they don’t bother everyone equally. For instance, Jared is completely unaffected, while they tend to find me quite appealing! A fantastic local tip to combat these pests is to lightly rub a small amount of baby oil over your exposed skin, much like you would lotion. This creates a barrier that prevents them from biting through, ensuring you can enjoy your evenings outdoors undisturbed. Consider this a crucial addition to your packing list!

4 — Light Sweater

Even in a tropical paradise, evenings, particularly during the winter months (roughly November to March), can bring a surprising chill. Temperatures can drop into the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 15-18 degrees Celsius), or even lower if there’s rain or a brisk wind. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack a light sweater or a stylish shawl. An abstract embroidered sweater or similar light outerwear would not only keep you comfortable but also complement the island’s vibrant, colorful aesthetic.

5 — Chips & Snacks

One of the more expensive items on Harbour Island can be imported snacks, due to shipping costs and customs taxes. For example, a bag of Doritos at a local grocery store might set you back around $5. To save a bit of money, it’s highly recommended to squeeze in some of your favorite chips and snacks into your luggage if you have space. This strategy can help you manage your budget more effectively. However, if packing snacks isn’t feasible, rest assured that the local Piggly Wiggly will have a decent selection available for purchase once you arrive, albeit at a slightly higher price point.

6 — Reusable Cups/Flasks

Given that cocktails at most restaurants and bars on Harbour Island can easily cost $12 or more each, bringing your own reusable cups or flasks is a brilliant way to save money on beverages. As mentioned earlier, liquor from the local liquor store (like 700 Liquor Store) is quite affordable. You can purchase your favorite spirits and mixers there to craft your own delicious cocktails, enjoying them on your porch or by the beach, and significantly reducing your overall drink expenses.
