The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity and creative energy here at Sugar & Cloth. Amidst the exciting yet demanding process of building our new studio space, a delightful respite arrived in the form of our highly anticipated, second round of sold-out calligraphy workshops. Partnering once again with the incredibly talented Laura Hooper Calligraphy, this weekend brought an inspiring break from the construction hustle, immersing us and our wonderful attendees in the elegant world of hand-lettering. These Houston calligraphy classes have truly become a highlight on our event calendar, fostering a vibrant community of aspiring artists and designers.
While we eagerly anticipate the grand unveiling of the new Sugar & Cloth studio, construction timelines meant we couldn’t host this particular event in our new home just yet. However, serendipity intervened beautifully! The incredibly gracious ladies who own the charming bakery and cafe situated just below our future space, and who also manage a dedicated studio for events, kindly opened their doors to us. This generous gesture allowed us to seamlessly pivot, ensuring the workshop’s success without compromise. Located on another side of the building, this alternative venue proved to be just as enchanting, offering a cozy and inspiring backdrop perfectly suited for fostering creativity and learning the delicate art of modern calligraphy in Houston. We are so incredibly grateful for their flexibility and hospitality, which truly saved the day and allowed us to deliver an exceptional experience for all.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions of the Houston calligraphy workshop benefited from an identical, meticulously curated setup. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, contributing to an atmosphere of elegance and inspiration that we love to create for our creative workshops. A particular highlight, and truly the unifying element that transformed the inherently urban space into a sophisticated haven, was the breathtaking floral artistry provided by Jennifer Laura Design. Their exquisite arrangements didn’t just decorate the room; they brought warmth, sophistication, and a touch of organic beauty, creating an inviting environment perfectly suited for fostering creativity and guiding our students through the foundational techniques of elegant script. The combination of modern aesthetics and natural elements truly pulled the entire event together, making each student feel welcomed and inspired.
No creative workshop is complete without a selection of delightful bites and refreshing sips to fuel the imagination and add to the celebratory atmosphere. Our guests were treated to an indulgent array of gourmet treats, carefully chosen to enhance the luxurious experience. We raised a toast with elegant Le Grand Courtage champagne, a sparkling addition that perfectly complemented the festive and artistic ambiance. Sweet cravings were exquisitely satisfied with delicate, melt-in-your-mouth macarons from the renowned Lette Macarons, celebrated for their vibrant colors and exquisite flavors that are almost as beautiful as calligraphy itself. For an extra touch of luxury and playful indulgence, we featured delectable 24k champagne marshmallows from Sugarfina, a true confectionery marvel that sparkled almost as much as our guests’ newly acquired skills. To balance the sweetness and offer a refreshing contrast, a thoughtful selection of fresh fruit and artisanal pink cheese was also available, ensuring a perfectly rounded culinary experience for everyone. These carefully curated refreshments provided the perfect accompaniment to an inspiring afternoon of learning and creativity.
My current obsession with the vibrant and chic Oh Joy! for Target holidays collection made its debut at our workshop, elevating the table settings with its signature blend of playful sophistication. I couldn’t resist incorporating their charming plates and coordinating utensils, which brought a vibrant, festive energy to each participant’s station and perfectly complemented the overall event design. What made this selection even more serendipitous was how flawlessly these pieces coordinated with Laura Hooper Calligraphy’s own gold-foiled Pop, Fizz, Clink napkins. The cohesive design, from the shimmering gold accents to the joyful patterns, created a truly Instagram-worthy aesthetic and a wonderfully immersive experience for our attendees, reinforcing the luxurious and celebratory mood of the day. These carefully chosen details underscored our commitment to providing an unforgettable and inspiring creative retreat, where every element contributes to a sense of beauty and creative discovery. It’s these small, thoughtful touches that transform a simple class into a truly memorable event, especially for those learning the delicate art of modern calligraphy.

Each participant received one of Laura’s beautifully designed calligraphy totes, overflowing with products generously donated by an array of awesome shops. These thoughtful keepsakes, distributed to both the AM and PM classes, added an extra layer of delight to the Houston calligraphy workshop experience. Inside, guests discovered:

- Pencil Sets from Splendid Supply Co.: For continued practice and everyday creative tasks, elegant pencil sets from Splendid Supply Co. were included. These beautifully designed pencils are not just practical but also a joy to use, perfect for sketching, journaling, or simply jotting down inspired thoughts, keeping the spirit of hand-lettering alive.
