Transform Your Space: A DIY Mid-Century Daybed & Stylish Guest Room Makeover
Welcome to the ultimate guide for transforming an often-overlooked space into a haven of style and comfort! We’re thrilled to share the complete journey of our DIY Mid-Century Daybed project and a full tour of our reimagined guest bedroom. This elegant daybed, inspired by classic Mid-Century design, is surprisingly simple to construct, requiring only a few basic tools and materials. Get ready to discover how you can replicate this stunning piece and elevate your home decor with minimal effort.

For quite some time, our guest room served as a catch-all space – a temporary residence for items awaiting a permanent home. Before it became the backdrop for various odds and ends, this room actually functioned as our craft studio, prior to our relocation to the first Sugar & Cloth studio. Looking back, we can’t help but wince at its former appearance. It was, in essence, the forgotten corner of our home, far from the inviting sanctuary we envisioned.
The urgency for a guest room renovation truly hit home when my father spent nearly a month with us, dedicatedly assisting with the new studio renovation. During his stay, he was relegated to sleeping on an inflatable mattress in this underutilized room. This moment crystallized our resolve: a stylish, comfortable Mid-Century DIY Daybed and a complete guest room overhaul were not just desired, but long overdue. It was time to create a space that genuinely welcomed our guests.
The transformation began with the careful selection of a few key pieces. Thanks to our slight obsession with All Modern, we found exceptional items that instantly injected character and interest into the room. Strategically, this particular room also provides direct access to our back patio. This unique layout made a daybed DIY an absolutely perfect choice, seamlessly blending the space into a universal zone rather than feeling like a mere passageway through a private bedroom. Furthermore, its compact design ensures it doesn’t overwhelm the room, which is a mere ten feet wide, maximizing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Materials and Tools Needed to Make a Mid-Century DIY Daybed
Crafting your own Mid-Century inspired daybed is simpler than you might imagine. This DIY project is perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike, promising a stylish and functional addition to your home. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need to get started:
- Waddell table legs — For an authentic Mid-Century look, we recommend 5 1/2″ tall legs. These provide the perfect height and aesthetic.
- Sofa or table leg mounting plates — These essential hardware pieces securely attach the legs to your daybed foundation. Ensure they are compatible with your chosen legs.
- Ikea Sultan twin size grey foundation and mattress — The IKEA Sultan Foundation in Grey Twin was our choice due to its robust wooden bottom and convenient fabric cover, which simplifies leg attachment. If the Sultan is unavailable, the Ikea Espevar Slatted Mattress Base in Twin offers a similar design and functionality. The key is to select a foundation that explicitly allows for leg attachment.
- Drill and screws for mounting plates — A reliable drill will make quick work of attaching the mounting plates. Ensure you have screws appropriate for both the plates and the wooden foundation.
- Wood stain in Walnut — To achieve that signature Mid-Century modern warmth, we opted for a rich walnut stain. However, feel free to choose any wood stain color that complements your existing decor.
- Foam brush — An inexpensive foam brush is ideal for applying wood stain smoothly and evenly, ensuring a professional finish without streaks.

Ikea Hack | How to Make a Mid-Century DIY Daybed
This IKEA hack is incredibly straightforward, transforming a standard bed foundation into a chic Mid-Century daybed in just a few steps. Follow these simple instructions to create your own:
- Stain the Wooden Legs: Begin by staining your unfinished wooden Waddell legs. Apply an even coat of your chosen wood stain, such as walnut, using a foam brush. For best results, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding application and drying times. Allow the legs to dry completely, which typically takes at least an hour, or as recommended by your stain product. Proper drying is crucial to prevent smudges and ensure durability.
- Attach Mounting Plates to the Foundation: While your stained legs are drying, prepare the twin bed foundation. Locate each of the four corners on the underside of the foundation. Using your drill and appropriate screws, securely attach a metal mounting plate to each corner. Our IKEA Sultan foundation, with its solid wooden bottom and grey fabric cover, made this step incredibly easy, as the screws readily anchored into the wood. Ensure the plates are firmly attached and evenly spaced for stability.
- Assemble the Daybed: Once the wood stain on your legs is completely dry to the touch, it’s time for assembly. Twist each stained leg into the corresponding mounting plate at all four corners of the bed foundation. Ensure they are tightened securely. Carefully flip the assembled base right side up. Finally, place your twin mattress on top of the foundation. And just like that, your custom Mid-Century DIY Daybed is ready to use! This simple process demonstrates how an IKEA hack can yield stunning and personalized results.

It’s truly as easy as those three steps! The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity and the customizability it offers, allowing you to achieve a designer look without complex carpentry skills.

Common Questions about Daybeds
Daybeds are versatile pieces of furniture that can serve multiple functions in a home. If you’re considering adding one to your space, here are some frequently asked questions to help you make the most of it:
- How can I make my daybed more comfortable? The key to a truly comfortable daybed lies in thoughtful accessorizing. Start with a high-quality twin mattress that fits your daybed platform, as this will serve as the foundation for comfort. Since daybeds are often deep, you’ll want to layer with an abundance of pillows. Large, firm pillows can act as a pseudo-headboard or backrest, providing excellent support for sitting or lounging. Experiment with different sizes and textures—Euro shams, decorative throw pillows, and even bolster pillows can enhance both comfort and aesthetic appeal. Consider a plush mattress topper for an extra layer of softness, and don’t forget a cozy throw blanket for added warmth and inviting texture.
- Can you sit on a daybed like a couch? Absolutely! Daybeds are designed with dual functionality in mind, making them excellent substitutes for sofas, especially in smaller rooms or multi-purpose areas. Their standard twin mattress size (typically 38 inches wide by 75 inches long) makes them as wide and deep as many traditional sofas, if not more so. With the right arrangement of backrest pillows, a daybed can comfortably seat one or two people, just like a standard couch. This makes them ideal for guest rooms, home offices, or living spaces where extra seating and sleeping options are valuable.
- How can I make my bed feel like a couch? If space is at a premium and a traditional sofa isn’t an option, transforming your bed into a couch-like seating area is a clever solution. The trick is to create a defined backrest. Arrange several large, supportive pillows against the wall behind your mattress. These could be Euro pillows, large throw pillows, or even custom-made bolster cushions. Ensure they are firm enough to provide good lumbar support when you’re sitting upright. This arrangement creates an inviting and comfortable seating area without the bulk of a separate sofa, and it easily converts back to a sleeping space when needed.
- What size is a typical daybed? Most daybeds are designed to accommodate a standard twin-size mattress, which measures approximately 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. This makes them compact enough for smaller rooms while still offering a comfortable sleeping surface for one person. Some larger daybeds might be designed for a twin XL or even a full-size mattress, but twin is by far the most common, aligning perfectly with their use as versatile seating and sleeping solutions.
- Daybed vs. Sofa: What’s the difference? While both offer seating, the primary distinction lies in their intended primary function and design. A sofa is primarily designed for sitting, offering a structured back and armrests. A daybed, on the other hand, is a hybrid. It’s built around a mattress, primarily for sleeping, but designed to function as a sofa for lounging or extra seating during the day. This dual purpose often means daybeds have a more open frame, resembling a bed, and rely on pillows to create a comfortable backrest when used for sitting.

Guest Room Decor Sources: Elevating Comfort and Style
Beyond the DIY daybed, every element in our guest room was carefully chosen to foster a serene, stylish, and functional environment. We aimed for a cohesive Mid-Century modern aesthetic with touches of contemporary comfort. Here’s a closer look at the decor elements that brought our vision to life:
- Daybed Linens & Pillows: To complement the daybed, we selected a dark grey pinstripe jersey sheet set from Target, offering a soft and inviting base. Layering was key for both comfort and visual interest:
- A Ferm Living geometric throw adds a touch of modern design and warmth.
- Dotted grey Euro shams provide substantial back support and a refined look.
- A geometric Ferm Living lumbar pillow offers targeted comfort and breaks up the larger shapes.
- The whimsical Ferm Living star round cushion adds a playful, unique touch, all sourced from AllModern.
- Functional Furnishings: Ensuring guests feel at home means providing thoughtful amenities. We paired a simple yet elegant mirror with the Hudson dresser. Inside the dresser, we keep extra blankets, fresh towels, shampoo, and a handy trinket tray for small items, anticipating every guest’s needs.
- Effortless Greenery: While we love the look of houseplants, our track record for watering them (especially in less-frequented rooms) isn’t the best. To introduce natural elements without the upkeep, we opted for stylish air plants nestled in these modern hanging vessels. They offer a touch of organic beauty and require minimal attention.

A true standout in the room is the captivating Flos lamp from AllModern. Its unique design never fails to draw attention, and as we’ve mentioned on Instagram, we’re still completely obsessed with it! Beyond its stunning aesthetics, this lamp provides incredibly bright illumination, offering a much more inviting alternative to the room’s overhead fan light. It ensures guests have ample, pleasant lighting for reading or simply relaxing, avoiding the harshness of standard ceiling fixtures.
