The Journey to “I Do”: Navigating Life and Love as Business Partners

For those new to our world, let me introduce you to Jared, my incredible partner in both life and business. As many of you know, we work together, which means our days are typically intertwined, almost seamlessly. You’d think that being together nearly 24/7 would give me some kind of premonition, a sixth sense for major life events like a marriage proposal. I honestly believed I’d spot it coming a mile away – a subtle shift, a nervous twitch, anything! Yet, Jared proved me wonderfully, beautifully wrong.

Our three years of dating have been a whirlwind of shared dreams, creative projects, and the occasional spirited debate (mostly about font choices, I assure you!). Marriage has certainly been a frequent topic of conversation, a beautiful future we envisioned together, but we always maintained that there was “no hurry.” This wasn’t due to any hesitation about our commitment, but rather a conscious decision shaped by our unique circumstances.

A significant part of our measured approach stemmed from personal growth and overcoming past challenges, hinted at in this previous post. Beyond that, the unpredictable yet exhilarating world of running a small business demanded much of our energy and focus. We poured our hearts into our work, believing that establishing a strong foundation for our professional lives would ultimately benefit our personal one.

However, over the past year, we’ve diligently worked through those earlier challenges, smoothed out old wounds, defined new job roles within our expanding business, and truly seen our enterprise flourish. It feels like we’ve finally reached a point of calm and confidence, a steady sailing after navigating some choppy waters. Little did I know, this newfound stability was the perfect backdrop for a monumental shift in our personal journey.

The Unsuspecting Morning: A Friday Like Any Other (Or So I Thought)

Fast forward to this past week, and the rhythm of our lives was perfectly normal, if not a little hectic. We were swamped with impending deadlines, I had a last-minute work trip pop up, and our usual household chores and email backlog awaited our attention. Despite the busy schedule, we made sure to carve out time for summer evenings with friends and had some fun weekend plans on the horizon. Life, in essence, was proceeding as usual.

Then came Friday, a day I had mentally earmarked for productivity. We had a relaxing staycation weekend planned, so my primary goal was to get to the studio early and power through our tasks. Now, anyone who knows me understands that I am decidedly *not* a morning person. So, you can imagine Jared’s genuine surprise when he found me not only awake but practically springing out of bed and ready to tackle the day at an ungodly 6:45 AM!

He, in his usual calm demeanor, told me to relax. He assured me we had ample time to get to the studio and suggested I take it easy while he prepared coffee and eggs. This, surprisingly, didn’t register as a red flag. After all, Jared is the undisputed champion of morning routines, making coffee and breakfast 99% of the time while I’m still blissfully lost in dreamland. It was simply Jared being Jared – caring and thoughtful.

Embracing the unexpected reprieve, I decided to make the most of what I affectionately call “my shows.” This translates to a delightful, albeit sometimes embarrassing, habit of endlessly watching random YouTube videos, diving headfirst down every digital rabbit hole imaginable. It’s a highly prestigious hobby, you see, and one I’m not exactly proud to admit, but it brings me undeniable joy! Haha!

A Breakfast Surprise and Lingering Suspicions

Lost in my digital reverie, the next thing I knew, Jared walked upstairs carrying a beautiful breakfast-in-bed tray, complete with a vase of stunning flowers. Now, Jared often surprises me with flowers, a gesture I adore. But these weren’t just any flowers; they looked like they’d just stepped off one of our meticulously styled photo shoots. They were perfect, artfully arranged, and far too elegant to be a casual “grab-and-go” bouquet.

Utterly confused, I blurted out, “Where did you get these flowers?!” To which he calmly replied, “Oh, I just picked them up.” Now, for those of you who know Jared personally, you’ll recognize the subtly goofy grin that spreads across his face when he thinks he’s pulled off a clever maneuver. At this moment, however, his face was completely straight, devoid of any tells. Looking back, I realize it was undoubtedly the nerves getting to him.

My natural inclination, of course, was to push the issue. “I KNOW FOR A FACT that you didn’t just pick these up!” I declared, perhaps a tad dramatically. “If flower vases like these were readily available for pickup within a 50-mile radius, I would absolutely know about it.” You know, because I always have to escalate things to that gloriously unnecessary next level, haha! He merely chuckled, offering, “I just wanted to do something nice for you,” before excusing himself to fetch the coffee.

While he was downstairs, my curiosity piqued. I discreetly scanned the room for any hidden candid cameras, convinced I was being pranked or filmed for some secret project. Then, I resorted to my ultimate detective tool: Snapchat. I started documenting my suspicions, sharing my “conspiracy theory” with my followers. Even then, I had ZERO inkling that a proposal was on the horizon. After all, it was just a regular Friday morning, filled with deadlines and routine tasks.

Jared returned upstairs with the coffee, asking if I needed anything else. I practically snatched the coffee from his hand, as if someone might steal my precious morning brew, and gently, albeit still confused, replied, “No, I’m fine.” He then walked back downstairs, seemingly totally nonchalant. This only fueled my Snapchat conspiracy theory. Who wouldn’t continue documenting such a bizarre morning?

The Moment: When a Regular Friday Became Extraordinary

Finally, he came back upstairs, this time holding our adorable fur child, Thomas. With Thomas nestled in his arms, Jared looked at me and said, “Thomas and I have something we want to tell you…” He then began to speak from his heart, explaining how much he loved me, how much I meant to him, and all the reasons he wanted to spend forever together.

I think you can fill in the rest of the scene – the shock, the tears (his, not mine initially!), the overwhelming joy. Surprisingly, it was Jared who started tearing up, completely overcome with emotion, while I was too busy celebrating with triumphant fist bumps in the air! Okay, perhaps not actual fist bumps, but my reaction was very much akin to a contestant on The Price Is Right, bouncing with jittery excitement at the incredible prize they’ve just won. It was a surge of pure, unadulterated happiness.

After that magical moment, we spent the next hour or so spreading the joyful news to all our family members, who were just as thrilled and surprised as I was. I just sat there, in a state of beautiful shock, staring at the sparkling ring on my hand. It was perfectly us: low-key, intimate, just the two of us (and Thomas!), on a completely normal Friday morning. There was no fancy camera crew documenting every angle for the blog, no elaborate setting, just us in our PJs, savoring our cherished morning coffee routine. Oh, and of course, a little Sriracha heart drawn on the breakfast plate – a testament to our quirky, authentic love!

Once I managed to pull myself back to reality and process the incredible news, we did what any dedicated small business owners would do: we headed straight to the studio for a typical workday!
