An Unforgettable Florida Adventure: Miami & Key West Travel Guide
As the year drew to a close, we couldn’t resist sharing the captivating details of what quickly became our most cherished trip of the year: an epic journey through Miami and the enchanting Florida Keys, culminating in the vibrant charm of Key West. This comprehensive travel guide offers insights from our unforgettable experience, perfect for anyone planning their own sunshine-filled escape.
Our adventure began with a blissful week in the tranquil Exumas, a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere awaiting us back in Florida. After soaking up the serene beauty of the Bahamas, we flew directly to Miami for a few exhilarating nights before embarking on our very first drive down to The Keys.
Having explored Miami previously, this time we opted for a different perspective, choosing to stay directly on iconic Ocean Drive. This proved to be an inspired decision, especially given that our visit coincided with Halloween. The bustling street transformed into an unparalleled hub for people-watching, offering endless entertainment and a truly immersive South Beach experience. We were also thrilled to reunite with our friends, Brittni and Jeff, who joined us in Miami to explore a slice of Florida together.
Unlike our usual Instagrammable travel guides, this Miami and Key West adventure defies easy categorization. Every corner, every vista, every culinary delight presented an irresistible photo opportunity. Seriously, the entire region is a visual feast! Furthermore, our whirlwind itinerary left us with a long list of places we yearned to visit but simply couldn’t squeeze in. (Just browsing the official Florida Keys site will expand your travel wishlist exponentially!). Therefore, this guide focuses on sharing our firsthand experiences, alongside a few highly recommended spots we hope to explore on our next visit.

Miami Magic: South Beach Stays and Sweet Indulgences
Our South Beach Sanctuary: Hotel Victor
During this visit, we chose to stay at the fantastic Hotel Victor, perfectly situated on the main strip of Ocean Drive. Its prime location meant we could conveniently park our car and then explore the rest of South Beach on foot or with a quick Uber ride. The hotel itself boasted a bathroom so luxurious, I seriously contemplated packing it up and taking it home! It truly enhanced our Miami experience.
A Willy Wonka Experience at Sugar Factory
As luck would have it, Hotel Victor hosts the renowned Sugar Factory as its onsite restaurant. I convinced myself that the extensive walking we did daily would perfectly counteract indulging in a late lunch here. And what an indulgence it was! The menu was arguably the most outrageous I’d ever encountered, with every dish appearing as if Willy Wonka himself had meticulously prepared it. The experience was hilariously awesome, as the photos clearly attest. Imagine 24 scoops of ice cream, piled high with waffle cones and every topping imaginable, arriving at your table adorned with giant sparklers. It was a spectacle as much as a meal, and an absolute must-try for anyone seeking a whimsical culinary adventure.

Our days in Miami were largely a delightful rotation of hopping from one incredible eatery to the next, punctuated by spontaneous photo opportunities – a travel style we’ve embraced wherever we go. Here are a few of our new favorite spots that truly stood out:
Favorite New-to-Us Places to Eat & Drink in Miami
- Yardbird: Renowned for its Southern comfort food and lively brunch.
- 1930s House: An exquisite spot for expertly crafted cocktails in a sophisticated setting.
- Bodega: Our go-to for delicious late-night bites with a fun, speakeasy vibe.
- Traymore: Offering a refined dining experience, perfect for a special meal.
- Cecconi’s: An elegant Italian restaurant with a beautiful outdoor courtyard, ideal for a leisurely meal.
- Verde: Located at the Pérez Art Museum, it’s a fantastic choice for brunch with stunning bay views.
- Sugar Factory: An experience in itself, with over-the-top desserts and a vibrant atmosphere.

Miami’s Cultural Canvas: Art & Museums
Of course, no trip to Miami would be complete without revisiting the iconic Wynwood Walls and the surrounding arts district. The ever-changing murals and vibrant street art never cease to amaze. This time, we also added the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to our itinerary, and it was absolutely awesome! We wholeheartedly recommend it if you have the time. The museum’s striking architecture and impressive collection are captivating, and the outdoor living wall hangings were particularly stunning, providing both beauty and a refreshing green oasis.

The Scenic Drive to Paradise: Exploring the Florida Keys
After three vibrant nights in Miami, we set off on the scenic drive down to The Florida Keys. The drive itself is an experience, winding along the iconic Overseas Highway with numerous picturesque stops along the way. In our eagerness to reach Key West, we initially hurried past many of the captivating intermediate Keys. However, we made sure to dedicate more time to exploring them on our return journey. Our drive down coincided with the very end of Fantasy Fest on a Sunday, which meant Key West was incredibly crowded, adding to the excitement!
Tracing “Bloodline” in the Keys
My husband, Jared, and I share a bit of an obsession with the Netflix series “Bloodline,” which is largely filmed in the Keys. This provided us with a fantastic, albeit unconventional, itinerary: stalking all the show’s filming locations! Our absolute favorite was The Mooring House, a truly stunning property. Even if you’re not a fan of the series, this unique quest offers an excellent way to discover some of the other charming Keys that you might otherwise overlook.
Islamorada: A Tranquil Oasis
Hands down, Islamorada stood out as the coolest Key, second only to Key West itself. We both genuinely wished we had allocated an extra night or two to stay there. Its beaches are absolutely stunning, and it offers a wonderfully relaxing and quiet environment, a delightful contrast to the energetic bustle of Key West. Despite its tranquil ambiance, Islamorada still boasts plenty to do. A highlight was undoubtedly trying the authentic key lime pie from the Morada Beach Cafe – a taste of true Florida tradition.
A Quick Stop at Anne’s Beach
We also made a point to stop at Anne’s Beach on both our drive down and back. A word of caution: if you miss the turning point for parking, it can be quite tricky to get back to, so keep a sharp eye out! The beach features a really cool boardwalk that runs along the shore, perfect for a leisurely stroll. While it’s a quick stop if you’re not planning to fish or swim, the unique walkway makes it worthwhile.

Key West Charm: Duval Street, Dining, and Daring Excursions
Our Stylish Stay at The Gates Hotel
Upon reaching Key West, we checked into The Gates Hotel. This place is incredibly cute, perfectly blending modern aesthetics with a relaxed beach vibe – definitely our style! While it’s a small trek away from the bustling Duval Street and many of the popular local spots, this distance offers a peaceful retreat. The hotel boasts a fantastic onsite craft cocktail bar and a food truck that will truly blow your mind with its homemade nachos and banana bread French toast – no exaggeration! We made it a point to enjoy breakfast from this food truck every single morning.
Culinary Delights in Key West
Beyond our delicious hotel breakfasts, we ventured out to try a variety of different restaurants across the island. Key West’s culinary scene is as diverse as its history. Here are our top picks for dining and drinking:
Favorite Key West Restaurants and Bars
- Blackfin Bistro: The lobster salad here was absolutely divine and a must-try.
- The Pineapple drink stand on Duval: Situated directly across from Blackfin, it’s perfect for a refreshing tropical beverage.
- The Porch: A charming drink spot with an undeniably romantic and intimate atmosphere.
- Garbo’s Grill: A fantastic food truck located right across from The Porch, serving up gourmet street food.
- Flamingo Crossing: The ideal spot for cooling down with delicious ice cream treats.
- Southernmost Beach Cafe: A lovely lunch spot right on the water, offering great views and a relaxed vibe.
- BO’s Fish Wagon: A hilariously awesome, quirky local gem serving fresh seafood in a rustic setting.
- Cuban Coffee Queen: Essential for an authentic taste of Cuban coffee and pastries.
- Blue Heaven: An iconic outdoor dinner spot known for its unique ambiance, live music, and resident chickens.
- Sloppy Joe’s: A historic Key West staple, perfect for enjoying live music and a lively atmosphere.

Navigating the Island: Rental Car & Scooter Adventures
With a rental car at our disposal, we primarily used it for getting around the island. However, we also took the plunge and rented scooters, which turned out to be an absolute blast! It was a thrilling first for me, overcoming my initial terror of navigating 40mph traffic on two wheels, but the freedom and fun made it entirely worth it.
Excursions That Made the Trip
Beyond simply exploring the charming historic parts of Key West and capturing photos of every brightly colored house within sight, we embarked on a few unforgettable excursions that truly elevated our trip:

-
Thrilling Jet Ski Tour with Barefoot Billy’s
Our first adventure was a high-octane jet ski tour around the island with Barefoot Billy’s, and it was absolutely awesome! These tours are not for the faint of heart; prepare to push your jet ski to full speed for most of the duration, regardless of how choppy the water might be. Brittni and Jeff had previously enjoyed this tour, making it an exciting first experience for Jared and me.
-
Romantic Sunset Schooner Ride on the Appledor
We also indulged in a breathtaking sunset Schooner ride on the Appledor. While you don’t venture too far offshore, the views are utterly stunning and definitely worth it. The experience is enhanced with complimentary beer and champagne, alongside a delectable cheese plate, making for a truly romantic and picturesque evening.

Future Adventures: What We Missed
While our three nights in Key West were packed with excitement, we definitely wished we had more time. We had hoped to squeeze in a breathtaking seaplane ride to Dry Tortugas National Park and experience the Ultimate Adventure with Fury. However, we prioritized exploring more of the island itself. For those aiming to cover extensive ground and enjoy numerous excursions, we highly recommend planning for at least five nights in Key West.

Best Time to Drive Between Miami and Key West
When planning your perfect Miami to Key West road trip, timing is everything. A crucial consideration is to steer clear of Florida’s hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1st to November 30th. The last thing you want is to find yourself caught in a tropical storm or hurricane during your eagerly anticipated vacation, as this can severely disrupt travel plans and overall enjoyment.
Generally, the ideal time of year to drive between Miami and Key West is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (late November to early December). During these seasons, the weather is usually pleasant, with comfortable temperatures and lower humidity, making for a much more enjoyable experience. While you might still encounter some traffic delays, especially during popular holiday weekends, these periods offer the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds. The summer months, coinciding with hurricane season, are typically the least recommended time to travel due to the heightened risk of storms and significantly more congested roads with peak vacationer traffic.
