Embracing the Journey: Realistic Postpartum Fitness Goals & Budget-Friendly Style
Welcome, everyone! Today, I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite things: honest reflections, incredible deals, and a heartfelt discussion about navigating life as a mom. After welcoming two beautiful baby girls in the past three years, I’m experiencing that familiar itch to reclaim a sense of self and vitality. Coupled with my undeniable love for a good dessert, it’s certainly time to set some realistic and sustainable fitness resolutions.
I recently had the wonderful opportunity to partner with the fantastic team at Gordman’s to share my 2020 goals. As soon as the idea was presented, I knew exactly where I wanted to start: refreshing my workout wardrobe to reignite my motivation and feel inspired on my fitness journey. There’s something truly empowering about new gear that fits well and makes you feel good, especially during this transformative postpartum period.
My Personal Postpartum Fitness Journey: Beyond the Numbers
Let’s be real – I’ve never been someone who’s naturally “fit” without putting in the work. Staying on a healthy track consistently requires conscious effort, dedication, and mindful eating habits. More importantly, I’m a firm believer in sharing the real, unfiltered postpartum body experience. It’s incredibly challenging not to fall into the comparison trap when social media often showcases perfectly “bounced back” mamas, creating unrealistic expectations for new mothers everywhere.
My fitness peak was undoubtedly around my wedding, thanks to consistent work with a personal trainer. At 5’3”, I weighed 130 pounds, feeling strong and confident. Just a few months later, I became pregnant with our first daughter, Gwen, feeling I had an excellent foundation. By the end of Gwen’s pregnancy, I reached 176 pounds, dropping to 152 pounds shortly after delivery. I diligently used Weight Watchers for a period, getting down to 145 pounds before becoming pregnant with Luca.
With Luca, I gained approximately 40 pounds. Now, at six weeks postpartum, I’m at 160 pounds. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about acknowledging the body’s incredible journey through pregnancy and birth, and giving myself the grace and time needed to heal and regain strength. My goal isn’t just weight loss, but a holistic feeling of wellness, energy, and comfort in my own skin, whatever stage I’m in.

The Essential Role of a Postpartum Wardrobe: Comfort and Confidence
One of the most crucial lessons I learned after having Gwen, and something I’m actively implementing with Luca, is the importance of having a transitional wardrobe. This applies especially to workout gear! Immediately attempting to squeeze into pre-pregnancy clothes is a recipe for feeling defeated and disheartened. It simply doesn’t serve your mental or physical well-being during this sensitive time.
After Gwen, I spent far too long re-wearing baggy maternity leggings. While comfortable, they made me feel perpetually frumpy and disconnected from my goals. Conversely, trying on my old workout clothes felt like a stark reminder of where my body used to be, leading to feelings of inadequacy. This time around, I made a promise to myself: no more maternity leggings, and no premature attempts at pre-baby clothes.
The solution? Investing in affordable, comfortable, and confidence-boosting transition clothes. You absolutely don’t need to break the bank to acquire activewear that makes you feel good about yourself as you navigate your “new normal.” This shift in mindset and wardrobe makes an immeasurable difference in how you perceive your body and approach your fitness journey. It’s an act of self-care and self-respect.

It felt like finding hidden treasures, transforming my fitness preparation into an exciting shopping adventure.
Many of you went wild on my Instagram Stories when I shared some of the fantastic deals I discovered while shopping at Gordman’s. The excitement around the Louis Vuitton finds and charming home decor items I spotted was palpable. “Insta vs. Reality”: Navigating Social Media and Body Image
Before diving deeper into my specific fitness plans, I feel it’s incredibly important to highlight how effortlessly we can curate and “hide” aspects of ourselves online that we may feel insecure about. The two photos above, taken moments apart on the same day, illustrate this point perfectly. They tell vastly different stories, don’t they?
The image on the left openly displays my post-baby belly, complete with stretch marks and the natural changes that come with childbirth. The image on the right, however, shows the transformative effect of simply pulling up my new high-waisted leggings to smooth and conceal these areas. This isn’t about deception; it’s a powerful reminder that what we see on social media is often a carefully constructed narrative. People typically share only what they *want* us to see, presenting a curated highlight reel of their lives.
This serves as a crucial reminder for all of us: comparison is truly the thief of joy. It’s easy to look at seemingly perfect online portrayals and feel inadequate. Trust me, I experience those feelings too! It’s essential to remember that everyone has their own struggles and insecurities, regardless of what their public persona suggests. Our worth is not tied to a flawlessly “bounced back” body or an Instagram-ready physique. Embrace your unique journey and celebrate your body for all it has accomplished.

My 2020 Postpartum Fitness Goals: Focus on Feeling Good
As for my personal 2020 fitness goals, I would be absolutely ecstatic to reach 135 pounds. However, I want to emphasize that achieving a specific number on the scale isn’t my sole or primary motivator. I would be just as, if not more, happy to simply feel more muscular, energized, and vibrant in my daily life. My ultimate goal is centered on holistic well-being rather than just weight loss.
I genuinely feel my best when my body feels toned and strong, and when I’m consistently nourishing it with good food. This feeling of internal wellness and physical capability far outweighs any arbitrary number. It’s about building sustainable habits that contribute to long-term health and happiness, allowing me to be the best version of myself for my family and myself.
My Current Simplified & Achievable Fitness Plan:
To ease back into a fitness routine without overwhelming myself, especially during the demanding newborn phase, I’ve outlined a highly practical and realistic plan:
- Re-engage with my WW Freestyle app: This program has always provided a flexible and mindful approach to eating, helping me track my intake without feeling overly restricted. Its focus on healthy habits makes it a perfect fit for my postpartum journey.
- Prioritize more walks with the girls around our neighborhood: Walking is incredibly beneficial for both physical and mental health. It’s low-impact, gets us fresh air, provides vitamin D, and offers precious bonding time with my daughters. These daily strolls are a simple yet powerful way to integrate movement into our routine.
- Incorporate at-home cardio workouts via Obe two or three times a week: Let’s be completely honest – I’m deep in the newborn phase, and the logistics of getting to an external gym are simply not feasible right now. Obe offers convenient, engaging, and varied workouts that I can do from the comfort of my living room, fitting perfectly into my schedule.
- Aim for 100 ounces of water per day: Hydration is critical for energy levels, metabolism, and overall bodily function, especially while breastfeeding. Carrying a large water bottle and consistently refilling it helps me reach this goal, making a noticeable difference in how I feel throughout the day.

Setting Realistic Expectations for Long-Term Success
My fitness goals might seem overly simplified to some, but through experience, I’ve discovered a fundamental truth: when my expectations become too extreme or rigid, I often struggle to stick with them. This time, I’m deliberately setting myself up for long-term, sustainable success rather than chasing quick, unsustainable fixes. The focus is on consistency, gradual progress, and building habits that I can maintain for years to come, not just for a few months.
The postpartum period is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s about nurturing my body back to strength, fostering a positive relationship with movement and food, and most importantly, being kind to myself through every stage. Every small step forward is a victory, and every choice made towards health is a valuable investment in my well-being.
