One Room Challenge Week 5: Master Suite Transformation Nears Its Grand Reveal!

Welcome back, design enthusiasts and fellow renovators! We’ve officially crossed into Week 5 of the One Room Challenge, and the progress we’re making on our master bedroom and bathroom suite is nothing short of incredible. What started as a vision on paper is now rapidly transforming into a tangible reality, and the excitement building up is almost unbearable! While we faced a couple of minor plumbing hiccups earlier, we’re thrilled to announce that our master bathroom is now fully tiled, laying a stunning foundation for the luxurious space we’ve been dreaming of.

This week has brought a flurry of significant milestones. The elegant Vinnova Gela 72-inch White Double Vanity with Carrera White Marble Top from Overstock has taken its rightful place, instantly elevating the bathroom’s aesthetic. The grand new Metrie bathroom double door, adorned with exquisite Emtek hardware, is meticulously installed, creating a much more inviting and functional entrance. We’re also mere steps away from completing all the final bathroom hardware installations, putting us on the fast track to a truly polished space. Every new detail installed reaffirms our design choices, and I find myself falling more and more in love with the progress each day!

Bathroom Bliss: A Deep Dive into Our Design Choices

The heart of this week’s update lies firmly in the master bathroom, where significant design elements have come to life. Seeing the vision materialize, piece by piece, is incredibly rewarding, and we can’t wait to share all the details of its evolving beauty.

The Statement Vanity & Fixtures

Let’s talk about the vanity – it’s an absolute showstopper! I genuinely can’t express how utterly enamored I am with this new focal point. The Vinnova Gela double vanity, with its crisp white finish and luxurious Carrera White Marble top, perfectly embodies the blend of modern elegance and timeless sophistication we aimed for. Its generous 72-inch span not only offers ample counter space for two but also serves as a commanding visual anchor in the room. The chosen design exudes a sense of serene luxury, making the bathroom feel instantly more high-end.

Pairing this magnificent piece with the brushed gold Kohler Purist widespread lavatory faucets from The Mine was a deliberate choice to introduce warmth and a touch of glamour. The low gooseneck spout design of the faucets adds a contemporary edge while perfectly complementing the vanity’s clean lines. The rich gold finish ties into the overarching metallic theme we’ve selected for all the bathroom hardware, creating a cohesive and polished look. Functionality meets exquisite design in this pairing, promising both beauty and durability for years to come.

On a logistical note, getting this substantial vanity into our townhome was quite the adventure! Being incredibly heavy and robustly built (a testament to its quality!), it required the strength of three large men and a rather amusing moment captured on Instagram stories to navigate it up three flights of stairs. But every bead of sweat was worth it; the final result speaks for itself.

The Grand Entrance: Metrie Doors & Emtek Hardware

The transition into the master bathroom has undergone a dramatic transformation. The installation of the new Metrie double doors has made an astounding difference. Gone is the cramped, somewhat awkward tiny old pocket door from before, which often felt like an afterthought. In its place, these substantial double doors immediately impart a sense of grandeur and openness, creating a much more luxurious entry experience into our private sanctuary. The quality of Metrie products truly shines through, offering not just beauty but also solid construction.

The choice of Emtek hardware for these doors was crucial in maintaining the elegant continuity of our design. The brushed gold handles on the double doors are a perfect match for the gold hardware featured throughout the bathroom, from the faucets to other forthcoming fixtures. This consistency in metallic finishes is key to achieving a cohesive and high-end aesthetic. The feeling of stepping through these impressive doors now truly feels like entering a bespoke space, a far cry from the previous setup.

The Art of Tiling: A Symphony of White & Marble

One of the most significant transformations this week has been the completion of all the tiling and grouting in the bathroom. The walls are now adorned with beautiful white ceramic subway tiles, a classic choice that offers a clean, crisp, and timeless backdrop. This selection ensures a bright and airy feel, contributing to the overall serene ambiance we envisioned for our master bathroom oasis. The consistency of these tiles throughout the shower and other wall areas creates a seamless and sophisticated look.

A notable change from our initial plans involved the wall shelves in the shower. We were originally aiming for some specific shaped wall shelves, but the existing piping behind the shower walls presented an unforeseen challenge. Achieving the proper spacing for our desired shelves would have necessitated a complete overhaul of the plumbing system, an expense that was simply not justified for the aesthetic benefit of shaped shelves. As any good renovator knows, flexibility is key, so we’ve adapted our plans and I’m already envisioning an even better, more cost-effective solution for that space!

Another pivotal decision was to go with white grout throughout the entire space, especially with the subway tiles. Initially, we considered black grout for a more graphic, high-contrast look. However, upon integrating the small marble hexagon tiles chosen for the shower floor – a practical necessity to ensure the proper slope towards the shower drain – we realized black grout would create too much visual busyness. The white grout allows the individual beauty of each subway tile to shine while creating a soft, expansive feel. It also beautifully complements the delicate pattern of the marble hexagon tiles, letting their natural variations stand out without competition.

Beyond the Bathroom: The Master Bedroom’s Next Steps

While the bathroom has seen a monumental leap forward, the master bedroom is not far behind. The Metrie baseboards are scheduled for installation this week, which will instantly add a finished touch to the walls and prepare the space for its next exciting phase. Once the baseboards are in, the remaining tasks are primarily cosmetic but immensely impactful.

Painting the walls will set the overall mood, and we’re diligently refining our color palette to ensure it perfectly complements the chosen furnishings and textiles. A major highlight will be wallpapering the accent wall located strategically behind the bed. This feature wall is designed to be a true statement piece, adding depth, texture, and a unique personality to the bedroom. I’m excited for the dramatic flair it will introduce!

The final crucial installation in the bathroom will be the glass shower door, which will enclose the tiled shower beautifully and provide that luxurious, open feel. Following these key installations, it will be all about the final styling touches – the art, lighting, textiles, and decorative elements that truly personalize a space and make it feel like home.

Anticipation Builds: Furniture & Final Styling

Currently, all our brand-new bedroom furniture is patiently awaiting its turn, neatly stacked in our dining room. You simply cannot imagine the joy I anticipate feeling when we finally get to move these pieces upstairs and see them placed within the newly transformed master bedroom suite. It’s the moment where the entire design truly comes together, and I can start to visualize the ultimate comfort and style of our sanctuary.

The anticipation for next week’s One Room Challenge update is incredibly high because that’s when the bedroom will truly begin to take shape with its furnishings. Of course, I’m holding back on showing too much before the grand final reveal, but trust me when I say, it’s going to be VERY fun to witness the unfolding transformation!

It’s crazy how much of a difference new doors, carefully selected tiles, and coordinated hardware can make in a space, isn’t it?! I also couldn’t resist styling a fun flat lay with the gold hardware and tiles. It just looks so pretty together, especially against the new Pergo floors from Lowe’s, which are also proving to be an excellent choice for durability and aesthetics. Every detail is meticulously chosen to contribute to a cohesive and luxurious master suite, and it’s truly coming together beautifully.
