It was a journey filled with luxury, romance, and smart budgeting that allowed us to create unforgettable memories in paradise.

For us, this was indeed a “luxury-budget” trip—we aimed for the best experiences and accommodations possible, demonstrating that even a lavish escape can be approached with fiscal mindfulness. We stayed in stunning four and five-star properties, often securing the most sought-after rooms, proving that a little planning goes a long way. Strategic Planning for a Dream Honeymoon: Moorea on a “Luxury Budget”

Our journey to Moorea was born out of a pivot in our wedding plans. We initially considered a destination wedding, which would have essentially combined our wedding and honeymoon into one event. However, opting for an intimate elopement in White Sands freed up a significant portion of our wedding budget, allowing us to allocate those funds towards an incredible honeymoon experience. We set a firm budget of $10,000 for our entire nine-night French Polynesia trip for both of us, a challenging target considering the region’s reputation for high costs.

To navigate the complexities of international travel and maximize our budget, we enlisted the help of our friend Taylor from The Simple Sol. Her expertise was invaluable in planning excursions, coordinating island flight transfers between Moorea and Bora Bora, and generally streamlining the logistics. While we opted for luxurious hotels, knowing that we rarely revisit the same destinations and had saved on wedding costs, it’s entirely possible to replicate our itinerary with more budget-friendly accommodations, potentially saving thousands of dollars. Navigating Flights to Paradise: Smart Travel Hacks

Getting to Moorea is an adventure in itself, but with a bit of foresight, it can be a smooth and cost-effective journey. Our flight path began in Houston, connecting through Los Angeles, then onto Tahiti, and finally to Moorea before moving on to Bora Bora. We are frequent flyers with Southwest Airlines, utilizing their hub in Texas and the convenient proximity of Hobby airport to our home. By cashing in our accumulated Southwest points, we secured free flights to Los Angeles. This was a fantastic saving, though it came with the caveat of a lengthy layover in LA.

Our initial plan was to productively spend the long layover working from one of the airport lounges, a prime perk of having an American Express business card. However, we encountered an unexpected hurdle: Air Tahiti, our airline for the LA to Tahiti leg, does not offer mobile boarding passes and lacks a permanent check-in kiosk at LAX. This meant we couldn’t check in and access the gates or lounges until precisely three hours before our flight. Consequently, we found ourselves “camping out” for six hours at a restaurant outside the terminal, a less-than-ideal start to our luxury escape! A key takeaway for future travelers: always confirm check-in procedures and lounge access policies for all legs of your journey, especially for international flights.

Despite this minor setback, choosing the overnight Air Tahiti flight proved to be a brilliant decision. Arriving in Tahiti early in the morning meant we could check into our hotel immediately and enjoy a full day of our vacation, rather than losing precious time (and money) arriving late at night only to go straight to bed. We booked our Air Tahiti flights through American Airlines, another carrier we regularly use, allowing us to leverage more of our airline points to cover the roundtrip from LA to Tahiti and back. Up to this point, our main expenses were limited to buying some food during our extended layover, showcasing the immense value of strategic points redemption.

Moorea: Seamless Arrival and Overwater Bliss at Hilton Moorea

Upon landing in Tahiti, Taylor had arranged a seamless transfer for us from the airport to the ferry terminal that would take us to Moorea. This pre-booked arrangement was incredibly convenient, ensuring we weren’t left scrambling for transportation. The short ferry ride offered our first glimpse of Moorea’s stunning emerald peaks rising from the turquoise waters. Once on the island, another shuttle, also pre-arranged, whisked us directly to our accommodation: the magnificent Hilton Moorea. Our stay here, in an exquisite overwater bungalow, was an absolute highlight and truly lived up to every expectation.

While the Hilton Moorea offers beautiful rooms on the beach or land, we wholeheartedly recommend splurging on an overwater bungalow if your budget allows. The experience of waking up to the gentle sounds of the ocean, having direct access to the clear lagoon from your private deck, and watching colorful fish swim beneath your glass floor panel is simply unparalleled. It transforms a luxurious stay into an iconic, once-in-a-lifetime memory.

It’s crucial for first-time visitors to understand that hotels in French Polynesia are generally not all-inclusive, and the cost of food and beverages can be exceptionally high. To put it in perspective, a single cocktail at the resort could easily cost $12 or more, while a simple sandwich for lunch might set you back around $20. Dinner prices were, as expected, even higher. Coming from a lifestyle where microwave meals are sometimes a reality, these prices were a significant adjustment!

To mitigate these costs, we adopted a smart strategy: we stocked up on snacks and drinks at the duty-free shop before leaving the airport in Tahiti. This allowed us to prepare our own beverages and enjoy light snacks in our bungalow, saving a considerable amount over the course of our stay. Our only regret was forgetting to bring reusable water bottles, which would have made transporting our drinks to the pool or beach much easier. For those looking to dine out, venturing to local restaurants outside the resort can often provide a more authentic taste of Polynesian cuisine at slightly more reasonable prices.

Exploring Moorea’s Charms: Excursions and Island Adventures

While the allure of our overwater bungalow was almost too strong to resist, we did venture out for one primary excursion in Moorea: renting a roadster. This open-air, go-kart-like vehicle with a makeshift roof offered a fun, albeit somewhat challenging, way to explore the island. The tropical heat and humidity, combined with the lack of air conditioning and doors, made for an intense full-day adventure, particularly in full clothing.

In hindsight, a shorter rental period of just a few hours would have been ideal for hitting the main sights without succumbing to the heat. Nonetheless, our roadster allowed us to discover some of Moorea’s hidden gems. We journeyed to the stunning Belvédère lookout, offering panoramic views of the island’s twin bays. We also explored the impressive pineapple fields, an unexpectedly amazing experience that showcased the island’s agricultural beauty. A visit to the local distillery provided a taste of Polynesian spirits, and we stopped at several other picturesque beaches along the way. Despite the discomfort of the heat after eight hours, driving around and discovering local restaurants made for a memorable part of our Moorea experience.

Embracing Resort Life & Moorea’s Unique Charms

Beyond our island exploration, a significant portion of our four-night, five-day stay in Moorea was dedicated to simply enjoying the incredible amenities of our overwater bungalow and the Hilton resort. The lagoon surrounding the hotel is beautifully shallow, typically only 4 to 5 feet deep, making it perfect for leisurely floats, swimming, and snorkeling right from our private deck. This direct access to the warm, clear waters was a luxury we fully embraced, spending countless hours soaking up the serene atmosphere and the stunning marine life.

Checking out from our slice of paradise, we took another pre-arranged shuttle to the Moorea airport. This small, charming airport was an experience in itself – essentially one large room, complete with resident roosters casually strolling about! It offered a delightful glimpse into the authentic, laid-back island life before we boarded the smallest plane we’d ever flown on for our next adventure: Bora Bora. We spent another five nights in Bora Bora, but the details of that leg of our journey are so extensive, they deserve their own dedicated post (Part 2 of our honeymoon series!).

Budgeting for Paradise: A Detailed Cost Breakdown for Moorea

While exact pricing for shuttles, inter-island transfers, and the Moorea hotel can fluctuate significantly based on factors like high or low season, booking lead times, and specific package deals, we can provide a summarized total to offer a realistic expectation of costs. Our portion of the trip covering Moorea, including all transfers, the Hilton Moorea stay, our flight to Bora Bora, two additional excursions on Bora Bora, and our flight back from Bora Bora to Tahiti (connecting to our already booked roundtrip ticket back to LA), amounted to approximately $4674.00 with tax. It’s important to note that this figure does not include food and drinks, which we managed separately.

Our final bill at check-out from the Hilton Moorea was $501. This included incidentals and a few purchases from the gift shop, such as overpriced but much-needed sunblock and aloe vera after we ran out. The primary room fee for our luxurious overwater bungalow was paid in advance as part of the initial package. For context, our Bora Bora hotel, after a small media discount in exchange for sharing our stay online, came to $3,000. Additionally, our food expenses and an extra excursion (a personal jet ski ride, a must-do for me!) in Bora Bora added another $1,200 to our tab. There was one final, unexpected expense related to our return journey, which I’ll elaborate on in our Bora Bora post.
