The Sugar and Cloth Origin Story

Life truly is a fascinating journey, full of unexpected twists and turns. Over the years, I’ve been asked countless times about the humble beginnings of Sugar & Cloth, and looking back, I realize I’ve never truly shared the complete, unedited narrative. It’s not a tale filled with dramatic, overnight success or a sudden, magical discovery. Instead, it’s a story of gradual evolution, persistent effort, and the sometimes-awkward process of finding your true calling. Yet, it’s a story worth telling—a raw glimpse into the real person behind the public jokes and the occasional, slightly uncomfortable winky faces I might post for the internet (or at least, for the tiny fraction of it that follows along!). So, settle in, because what follows is the unconventional chronicle of how Sugar & Cloth came to be.

The Genesis of a Dream: How Sugar & Cloth Began

Navigating Early Uncertainty: College, Career, and Crossroads

My journey into the world of blogging and creative entrepreneurship wasn’t a direct path. At 26 now, I look back at my younger self at the precipice of my junior year of college, where I made the daunting decision to take a break. I was pursuing graphic design, a field I initially thought held promise. However, as the semesters progressed, a persistent unease began to settle in. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t my lifelong passion, that I couldn’t envision myself thriving in a full-time graphic design career for decades to come. This pervasive uncertainty made it incredibly difficult to stay motivated, to pour my heart into assignments when the foundational commitment felt so shaky. The idea of dedicating myself to something “forever,” as it felt at the time, was overwhelming and frankly, terrifying.

Stepping away from school without a concrete plan was a terrifying leap of faith. The thought of facing my parents, especially knowing that a significant scholarship was funding my education and wouldn’t necessarily be there upon my return, filled me with dread. But the need for clarity outweighed the fear. I desperately needed space to explore, to breathe, and to truly understand what truly ignited my spirit. This period of academic pause became an unintentional but crucial phase of self-discovery, setting the stage for everything that would follow.

A Winding Road: From West Virginia to Texas

A few months after leaving college, a new chapter began with a move from my home state of West Virginia—a place my heart still holds dear—to North Carolina. There, I spent some time contributing to a local church alongside dear friends, which offered a sense of community and purpose during a transitional phase. This period was also marked by a series of what I affectionately call “weird jobs.” From behind the counter at Camera Corner (shout out to my colleagues there!) to various other roles, each experience, no matter how brief or peculiar, chipped away at my preconceived notions and offered new insights into the working world.

Interspersed with these odd jobs was a substantial amount of contract graphic design work. While it offered flexibility and a way to utilize my skills, these contract gigs served as undeniable confirmation: a full-time career solely dedicated to graphic design was indeed not my true calling. The creative spark I sought felt stifled by the commercial demands, and I longed for a more personal, unbridled outlet for my artistic energy. This realization, though initially a setback, was a pivotal moment, narrowing my focus and pushing me closer to what would become Sugar & Cloth.

Life, however, had more lessons in store. As the economy took a downturn, living independently in North Carolina became financially unsustainable. While returning to West Virginia felt like a step backward after experiencing life in a bigger city, I knew I needed a change. This led to another significant cross-country move, this time to Texas, where my incredibly supportive aunt and uncle graciously offered me a place to stay while I found my footing. It was a period of immense vulnerability and uncertainty, far from the stability I craved.

The Seafood Restaurant and the Spark of Inspiration

In Texas, necessity dictated my first job: a position at a local seafood restaurant. It was a means to an end, a way to quickly earn money and regain some independence. While the people I worked with were genuinely wonderful, the job itself was a grueling experience. There’s a particular kind of clarity that comes from someone yelling obscenities at you over forgotten tartar sauce—a moment where you can’t help but ask yourself, “What on earth am I doing here?!” That incident, as absurd as it sounds, became a profound turning point. It wasn’t just about the tartar sauce; it was the culmination of years of searching, of feeling unfulfilled, and of knowing I was meant for something more creatively stimulating.

That moment of deep frustration ignited a fierce determination within me. I realized I desperately needed a creative project, something I could build from the ground up, something that was entirely mine. It was in this crucible of self-reflection and professional discontent that the idea for Sugar & Cloth was born. I needed an outlet to explore my passions, to discover what truly excited me, and to escape the feeling of being stuck. It was a quiet, personal rebellion, a promise to myself that I would find my creative purpose.

The Early Days of Sugar & Cloth: A Passion Project Takes Root

Starting Sugar & Cloth was less about launching a business and more about cultivating a personal garden of creativity. In those nascent months, the readership was, to put it mildly, intimate. I’m about 99% sure my Mom, Dad, and Grandma constituted my entire audience, and their unwavering support meant the world. There were no grand expectations of monetization or widespread fame; it was simply a space to share what I was making, a way to connect with friends and family, and an exciting outlet for my burgeoning projects.

What began as a simple creative pursuit quickly evolved into something more profound. It became a commitment, almost a solemn promise to myself, to escape the rut I felt trapped in and actively pursue my passion. I didn’t make a dime from the blog in those early days, but I treated it with the seriousness of a full-time job. This meant consistent effort, learning new skills, experimenting with content, and showing up day after day, even when motivation waned. This disciplined approach, born out of a deep personal need for creative fulfillment, laid the essential groundwork for what Sugar & Cloth would eventually become. It was about accountability to my own dreams, cultivating a habit of creation, and believing that consistency would eventually lead to discovery.

Building Community and Taking the Leap to Full-Time

The beauty of starting Sugar & Cloth extended far beyond the creative output; it was also a powerful connector. Through this burgeoning online platform, I began to meet incredible individuals who shared similar passions. One such connection led to a significant opportunity: meeting Brooke and subsequently joining the team at Smilebooth. This role became an integral part of my journey, providing invaluable experience and a sense of professional growth while I continued to nurture Sugar & Cloth on the side.

For the majority of my blogging career, I juggled two demanding roles: my day job at Smilebooth and my passion project, Sugar & Cloth. This period was characterized by countless late nights, early mornings, and a constant balancing act. It was exhausting, but every ounce of effort felt justified by the progress I saw in my own creative endeavor. I was slowly but surely building a foundation, learning the ropes of online content creation, photography, and brand building. The dream of making Sugar & Cloth my sole focus grew stronger with each passing year, fueled by the positive reception and the sheer joy I found in the work.

Finally, just this past fall, after years of dedication, strategic planning, and a deep breath, I took the ultimate plunge: transitioning Sugar & Cloth into my full-time job. The story of how I transformed a passion project into a viable business is a saga in itself, one I look forward to sharing in greater detail another time. But suffice it to say, it was a decision born from years of hard work, calculated risks, and an unwavering belief in the vision I had cultivated.

The Present and Beyond: A Dream Realized

Now, just over three and a half years since that very first blog post—a thought that still makes me exclaim “yikes!” at how quickly time flies—I find myself in an entirely new and exhilarating phase. Sugar & Cloth operates from a vibrant new studio in East Downtown, and I have the incredible privilege of collaborating with brands I once only dreamed of working with. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the magic that can happen when you truly commit to your passion.

This journey has been anything but easy. It has demanded an immense amount of work, especially during those years of balancing two demanding careers. There were countless sleepless nights, moments of profound self-doubt, and even the occasional, floor-bawling tantrum that only a true creative entrepreneur would understand. I’ll spare you the exhaustive details of those more challenging periods in a single sitting (some stories are best reserved for more than just one cup of coffee!), though much of my raw experience from a particular year is candidly shared in this post about my secrets. But for every hardship, there were even more moments of pure joy, of uncontrollable laughter shared with the incredible community and team that has grown around Sugar & Cloth, many of whom you can glimpse in these behind-the-scenes glimpses.

The journey from a graphic design student questioning her path to the founder of a thriving lifestyle brand has been an extraordinary one.
