Transforming Our Townhome Kitchen: A Journey from Basic to Breathtaking
After much anticipation, we’re finally pulling back the curtain on our complete kitchen makeover. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, especially considering the timing. I genuinely cannot express how thankful I am that we managed to complete this significant upgrade before our little Gwen arrived. What seemed like a miracle at the time, navigating a small kitchen makeover with a baby on the way, turned into a beautifully executed reality, providing us with a functional sanctuary just when we needed it most.
While we didn’t undertake any major structural changes or alter the existing kitchen layout, the transformation is truly drastic. We started with a kitchen that was built with rental-grade quality – functional, but lacking in personality, durability, and modern features. Our vision was to elevate this space significantly, focusing on key upgrades that would make a monumental difference in both aesthetics and daily utility.
The original cabinets, overall layout, and flooring all remain the same, proving that you don’t always need a complete demolition to achieve a high-end look. Sometimes, strategic improvements to core elements can yield astonishing results. We improved leaps and bounds from the basic setup, turning a generic kitchen into a personalized, high-performance cooking haven.
Our biggest priorities for this townhome kitchen renovation were undoubtedly replacing the worn countertops and upgrading all the outdated appliances. The difference these two changes alone made is astounding. KitchenAid generously provided all our new appliances, and I must confess, I now feel like I’m living the ultimate Pinterest cooking dream! It’s an incredible feeling to step into a kitchen where every appliance not only looks stunning but also performs flawlessly.
Seriously, our old dishwasher sounded like a jet engine preparing for takeoff – and that’s not even an exaggeration! The contrast with our new, whisper-quiet KitchenAid models is a daily luxury we never knew we needed until now. These upgrades have transformed mundane kitchen tasks into enjoyable experiences, making our kitchen a true pleasure to spend time in.

Its high-speed cooking capabilities are a huge time-saver for our busy household.
- Dishwasher with Dynamic Wash Arms and Bottle Wash (KDTM704ESS): The true unsung hero for any parent, or anyone who frequently uses water bottles and unique shaped containers, is the bottle wash feature! It boasts dedicated spray nozzles in the upper rack, perfectly designed to deep clean bottles, jars, and even delicate vases. This ensures every nook and cranny is sparkling clean, something previous dishwashers struggled with. Beyond this innovative feature, the dishwasher operates with remarkable quietness, a blessing when you have a napping baby or simply want a peaceful kitchen environment. The dynamic wash arms provide comprehensive coverage, ensuring every item, no matter how soiled, emerges spotless.

The exterior ice and water dispenser offers unmatched convenience, while the spacious interior, with its smart organization features, ensures all our groceries are kept fresh and easily accessible. The standard depth integrates seamlessly with our existing cabinetry, maintaining a sleek and uncluttered look.
Each KitchenAid appliance was chosen not just for its beautiful design, but for its robust performance and thoughtful features that truly cater to the demands of a busy family kitchen. They transform routine tasks into enjoyable parts of our day, allowing us to spend less time on chores and more time creating memories.
Elegant and Durable: The Countertop Transformation
With our new KitchenAid appliances expertly installed, the next crucial step in our kitchen makeover was upgrading the countertops. This was a decision we spent considerable time on, balancing aesthetics, durability, and practical considerations for a busy household. We opted for new LG HI-MACS in the sophisticated Passo style, a choice that has truly elevated the entire space.
The process was surprisingly straightforward. We utilized the design services team in the Lowe’s countertop section, which streamlined everything. It was as simple as visiting the store, selecting the Passo style that instantly captivated us, and then scheduling the measurements and installation. Their expertise made a potentially overwhelming process incredibly manageable and enjoyable.
LG HI-MACS solid surface countertops are renowned for their exceptional qualities. Being GreenGuard certified, they offer a healthy option for our home, which was a significant factor for us. Beyond that, their practical benefits are countless: they are incredibly durable, resisting scratches and impacts from daily use; remarkably easy to clean, wiping away spills effortlessly; and perhaps most importantly, non-porous. This non-porous nature means they won’t harbor bacteria or stains, making them a hygienic choice for food preparation and maintaining a pristine kitchen environment.
One of our favorite design decisions was to extend the width of our kitchen island. This simple modification made it much more suitable for comfortable bar stools, transforming it into a more functional and inviting hub for casual meals, homework, or simply gathering with family and friends. Complementing this, we created an elegant infinity edge out of the countertops. This subtle design detail adds a touch of modern luxury, making the island feel seamless and exceptionally stylish. Aside from having appliances that make me feel like a culinary queen, this infinity edge island is truly my favorite part of the entire kitchen!
Refining Details: Kitchen Cabinets and Hardware Updates
When it came to the existing cabinetry, we were fortunate. We genuinely appreciated the clean, modern look of the white cabinets already in place – it was one aspect we truly lucked out on in our original kitchen! Therefore, instead of a complete overhaul, we focused on impactful, yet simple, changes to elevate their appearance and functionality. The primary update involved replacing the standard knobs with simple, elegant brushed gold ones. This seemingly small detail made a huge difference, adding a touch of warmth and sophistication that perfectly ties into our overall design aesthetic.
Even though our new KitchenAid appliances feature sleek stainless steel and crisp white finishes, I couldn’t resist introducing a captivating gold element with our faucet. This bold choice beautifully complements the infinity edge island and adds a luxurious focal point to the sink area. We opted for a Kohler pull-out sink faucet, chosen for its exceptional functionality and elegant design. The pull-out feature makes cleaning the sink and surrounding areas incredibly easy, a practical benefit for any busy kitchen.
To complete the sink station, we paired the gold faucet with a magnificent Kohler under-mount white farmhouse sink. The farmhouse sink brings a touch of classic charm and offers ample space for washing larger pots and pans. Its under-mount installation ensures a seamless transition from the countertop, enhancing both aesthetics and ease of cleaning. The subtle gold trimmings on the sink further harmonize with the faucet and cabinet hardware, creating a cohesive and beautifully curated look.
These thoughtful selections for our kitchen hardware and fixtures demonstrate how strategic upgrades, even without changing the entire cabinet structure, can dramatically transform a kitchen’s style and functionality. The combination of classic white, modern stainless steel, and luxurious gold creates a balanced and inviting atmosphere.
Curating the Perfect Kitchen Decor
With the major renovations complete – the gorgeous new KitchenAid appliances, the stunning LG HI-MACS countertops, and the updated hardware – the final touch was to infuse personality and warmth into the space through carefully chosen kitchen decor. This stage is where a house truly starts to feel like a home, reflecting our personal style and making the space truly inviting.
The rest was simply adding in a few key design pieces that enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of our newly transformed kitchen. We selected elegant countertop stools for the extended island, creating a comfortable and stylish spot for casual dining, morning coffee, or simply chatting while someone cooks. These stools are not just seating; they’re an invitation for connection and interaction in the heart of our home.
To further personalize the space, we incorporated chic mix-and-match marble and gold shelves. These shelves serve as perfect display areas for some of my favorite kitchen accessories, cookbooks, and decorative items. They add vertical interest and allow us to showcase pieces that bring us joy, breaking up the expanse of the walls with curated vignettes. The blend of marble and gold complements the existing white, stainless steel, and gold elements, creating a cohesive and luxurious feel.
I absolutely adore how this kitchen makeover turned out. It truly feels like the vibrant heart of our home, especially given its open-concept design. It seamlessly opens up to our dining room and living room, all on the same floor, creating an expansive and connected living space perfect for entertaining and family life. The flow between these areas is now effortless, allowing us to interact whether we’re cooking, dining, or relaxing. This kitchen is not just a place to prepare food; it’s a central gathering spot, a creative outlet, and a beautiful reflection of our journey.
