You guys, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that our family is growing! We’re having a baby! It feels incredible to finally share this monumental secret that has been bubbling up inside us for weeks. We’ve been keeping this under wraps, and honestly, we’re still pinching ourselves! Raise your hand if you expected this news so soon, or were we the only ones caught delightfully off guard?
A Journey Begins: Our Unexpected Path to Parenthood
From the very early days of our relationship, Jared and I always knew we wanted to have children. It was a shared dream, a foundational piece of our future together. However, we had a very clear timeline in mind: we agreed that we would wait until I turned 30 before actively trying to expand our family. With my 29th birthday having just passed in May, I had a full year mentally penciled in for enjoying life as a couple before embarking on the adventure of parenthood. The universe, it seems, had other plans, proving once again that life’s greatest blessings often arrive when you least expect them.
The First Clues: More Than Just Post-Vacation Blues
Our story took an unexpected turn just before my 29th birthday. We had recently returned from an unforgettable Scandinavian cruise, and I found myself battling what I could only describe as the most severe case of “jet lag” and dehydration I had ever experienced. The exhaustion was overwhelming, a deep-seated weariness that no amount of rest seemed to cure. Coupled with a persistent, low-grade nausea that lingered through the days, it felt like my body was staging a full-blown rebellion. I attributed it to the rigors of travel, the time zone changes, and perhaps not drinking enough water on the ship, but deep down, a little voice began to whisper something else entirely.

That Life-Changing Test: A Moment of Profound Shock
After several days of feeling utterly drained and increasingly nauseous, the subtle whispers grew louder. Half of me dismissed it as pure paranoia, a symptom of being overly tired and perhaps a touch anxious. The other half, however, was on high alert, bracing for a potentially life-altering revelation. So, with a mix of trepidation and curiosity, I took a pregnancy test at home. The anticipation was palpable, a silent scream in my mind as I waited for the result. When those two distinct lines appeared, indicating a positive result, my world tilted on its axis. I remember sitting in the bathroom, completely paralyzed by shock, for what felt like an eternity – at least 20 minutes, though it could have been longer.
In those moments, a whirlwind of emotions washed over me: intense excitement, followed by overwhelming shock, then a pang of fear, immediately eclipsed by an immense surge of love, only to be hit by another wave of profound shock. It was a chaotic, beautiful symphony of feelings, and I’m pretty sure time itself stood still. The extreme case of “jet lag” finally made perfect sense – it turned out I was already six weeks pregnant! While the logical explanation brought clarity, my mind was still reeling, trying to process the enormity of what was happening.

Sharing the Joy: Telling Jared and Embracing Our Blessing
With my heart pounding and a trembling smile on my face, I walked into the bedroom to tell Jared. I genuinely don’t think I have ever seen him so utterly excited in our entire relationship. His reaction was pure, unadulterated joy, a perfect mirror to the love already swelling in my heart. We were both ecstatic, but also profoundly blessed. We had always imagined our journey to starting a family might involve a long and winding road, perhaps challenges and waiting. Instead, this incredible blessing found us, seemingly effortlessly and precisely when we least expected it. It was a humbling reminder of the unpredictable and beautiful nature of life.
Though I was (and still am, at times!) slightly overwhelmed and scared by this entirely new role and the immense responsibility it entails, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and in its perfect timing. This unexpected turn of events felt divinely orchestrated, a beautiful testament to the natural flow of life.

Navigating the Early Weeks: A Melding of Hope and Apprehension
As the initial shock began to subside, a new layer of emotion emerged. The more excited I allowed myself to feel, the more a subtle fear crept in. So many dear friends and family members have tragically experienced miscarriages, and the thought of falling too deeply in love with this tiny life, only to lose it, was a heavy burden. It was such a weird, often conflicting, melting pot of emotions. For about two weeks, I felt like I was walking around in a beautiful, yet terrifying, daze, anxiously awaiting my first doctor’s appointment.

The First Glimpse: Hearing Our Baby’s Heartbeat
The moment we finally went in for that first doctor’s appointment was nothing short of magical. Hearing our baby’s strong, rhythmic heartbeat for the first time was an indescribable experience. All the fears and anxieties that had been swirling around vanished, replaced by an overwhelming sense of love and wonder. It was literally impossible not to be utterly smitten, regardless of any lingering apprehensions. That tiny, fluttering sound solidified everything, making it profoundly real and irrevocably cementing our bond with the little one growing inside me.
Spreading the News: Our Families’ Unforgettable Reactions
Needless to say, our families might possibly be even more excited than we are, if that’s even possible! Sharing the news with our loved ones has been one of the most heartwarming parts of this journey so far. Each reaction has been priceless, but we were especially lucky to capture Jared’s Mom’s reaction on video – a moment we will cherish forever! For her birthday, we orchestrated a special reveal. We wrapped her present in two nesting boxes, building up the anticipation with each layer she unwrapped. The very last box contained the ultimate surprise: a pair of adorable baby shoes nestled beside our baby’s sonogram picture. Her gasp, her tears, and her sheer joy were incredibly moving to witness.

The Journey So Far: Pregnancy Updates & Lessons Learned
This whole experience has been a whirlwind of new sensations, emotions, and learning curves. Here are some random updates and things we’ve discovered along the way:
First Trimester Trials and Triumphs
- Our little bundle of joy is due in January 2018! We’re already counting down the days until we meet them.
- The first trimester was undeniably a doozy, especially from 6.5 weeks to 11 weeks. It certainly wasn’t my friend! I experienced a constant battle with nausea and a profound, bone-deep fatigue that I didn’t even know existed. It truly felt like I was operating in a fog for weeks on end.
- I’ve officially experienced a new level of tired that I didn’t know existed before. It’s a kind of exhaustion that sleep barely touches, a constant drain on your energy reserves.
- The learning curve of being pregnant is incredibly steep. Every day brings a new symptom, a new question, or a new realization about the incredible changes happening within my body.
Embracing the Second Trimester
- Thankfully, the second trimester has proved to be a much kinder companion. The relentless nausea has subsided significantly, and I’m starting to reclaim some of my energy. It feels wonderful to be able to enjoy food again and feel more like myself, albeit a rapidly expanding version!
- A huge shoutout to my friend Lexy for recommending The Bump app! It has become my go-to resource for tracking baby’s development, understanding what to expect, and getting answers to my endless questions. It’s an invaluable tool for any expecting parent.
- During those challenging first few months, I became a serious carb-loader. Plain bagels, crackers, and pasta were my best friends, as they seemed to be the only foods that consistently settled my stomach and provided some much-needed comfort.
