Beyond the Screen: Embracing Authenticity and Purpose in the Digital Age

Let’s be candid with each other, as friends. I’m about to confess something that might resonate with many, and I hope you won’t judge me too harshly. To be completely honest, I’m simply over it. I’m over the relentless pursuit of social media numbers—the likes, the followers, the endless analytics that dictate perceived success. I’m over staging picture-perfect moments and sharing carefully curated images of myself when, deep down, I’m truly a behind-the-scenes kind of person. I’m tired of investing in elaborate props and decor for parties that few attend, all for the sake of a blog post or an Instagram story. The pressure to sacrifice my free weekends, constantly seeking out “cool” content to uphold my blogging persona, has become exhausting. Frankly, I’m just… over the entire facade.

My passion for what I do remains unwavering. I poured an incredible amount of hard work and dedication into transforming this dream into my actual job. However, it’s a disservice to pretend that everything online is flawless and effortlessly beautiful. Anyone who suggests otherwise isn’t being entirely truthful. And if there have ever been moments when things here at Sugar & Cloth seemed perpetually perfect, then I, too, have inadvertently contributed to that illusion. After countless honest conversations with friends, my husband Jared, and even a few socially unacceptable moments of talking to myself, I haven’t pinpointed the exact solution to escape this cycle of number-chasing and work-induced funk. But one undeniable truth has emerged: redirecting your focus from yourself and genuinely investing in the well-being of others is always, without exception, a profoundly good idea. I genuinely despise being reduced to a mere Instagram follower count, a Pinterest pin number, a Twitter impression, or a Facebook engagement metric. I yearn for the days when digital interactions felt more open, authentic, and truly connected.

The Paradox of Inspiration: Finding Purpose Amidst Superficiality

It’s a genuinely heartbreaking dissonance for me to witness the immense sorrow, pain, sickness, and injustice unfolding across the globe, only to then hit “publish” on a blog post about, say, how to paint macarons. This isn’t born of blindness or naivety to the world’s harsh realities. It’s simply the nature of my profession. And while I deeply cherish the creative process and the opportunity to share inspiring content with all of you, I can’t simply abandon my work or ignore it to dwell solely on the world’s myriad challenges. This platform is meticulously crafted to be a space of inspiration, joy, and creativity—that is its fundamental purpose. Yet, I believe there’s a significant misconception that arises from a reader’s perspective (and I include myself in this), where we tend to look at others in the online space and fall into patterns of comparison, wonder, or even criticism during moments of personal vulnerability or insecurity. This environment, while seemingly designed for connection, can often foster feelings of inadequacy rather than empowerment.

After a series of heartfelt discussions with my dear friend Brittni from Paper & Stitch, we arrived at a shared conclusion: we need to proactively become the change we wish to see in this industry and in the world. For Sugar & Cloth, this journey begins with a profound commitment to giving back. For the entire year, and now extending indefinitely, Sugar & Cloth will donate 5% of our earnings from every single sponsored campaign we undertake to charity. Our belief is steadfast: when you feel lost, when you lose sight of your true north, the most powerful and effective remedy is to shift your focus outward, prioritizing the needs and well-being of others above your own. This isn’t just a temporary initiative; it’s a fundamental shift in our operational philosophy, embedding philanthropy into the very fabric of our business model. We aspire to demonstrate that commercial success and social responsibility are not mutually exclusive but can, in fact, be beautifully intertwined.

This initiative is far from a solo endeavor. I am not a one-person machine, and the impact we create is truly a collective effort. It was crucial to me that Jared and Kayla, the incredible individuals who form the backbone of Sugar & Cloth, felt equally invested and empowered in making a tangible difference through their hard work. Every time we choose to create something new, or embark on a new partnership, it’s a decision made with the shared understanding that a portion of that effort will translate into meaningful charitable contributions. While I may often be the voice and the public face behind the content you read here, Kayla and Jared are the exceptionally hardworking, kind-hearted, and selfless team members who dedicate their talents every day to bring everything to life alongside me. Their commitment, creativity, and unwavering support are indispensable, and their personal investment in our charitable mission makes this undertaking all the more powerful and authentic.

Ashley’s Charity of Choice: The Max Burdette Fibrolamellar Cancer Research Foundation

Many of you may already know that my family has faced several battles with cancer over the years. The most recent and profoundly heartbreaking loss was my sweet cousin, Max, who passed away from fibrolamellar carcinoma at the tender age of 17. Fibrolamellar carcinoma is an extremely rare and aggressive liver cancer that primarily affects adolescents and young adults who typically have no underlying liver disease. Its rarity makes research funding particularly challenging to secure, yet it is desperately needed to understand this devastating disease and develop effective treatments. To honor Max’s memory and ensure his fight was not in vain, a foundation has been established in his name. This foundation is dedicated to raising crucial funds for research, specifically channeling donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude is at the forefront of pioneering research and treatment for catastrophic pediatric diseases, and their commitment to finding a cure for fibrolamellar carcinoma in Max’s name gives us immense hope. Every dollar contributed helps advance the scientific understanding and eventual eradication of this formidable disease, offering hope to other young patients and their families. Jared’s Charity of Choice: The First Tee

This incredible charity organization resonated deeply with me, not only as an ardent advocate for children but also as someone who developed a profound passion for the sport of golf and the transformative power of stepping outside one’s comfort zone while growing up. The First Tee’s mission is truly inspiring: it provides underprivileged and disabled children with the invaluable opportunity to engage in an activity that not only challenges them physically but also teaches them profound life lessons through the game of golf. Beyond simply learning to swing a club, participants cultivate essential character-building skills such as patience, dedication, respect, perseverance, and positivity. These aren’t just skills for the golf course; they are virtues that children can carry with them throughout their lives, empowering them to navigate challenges, build strong relationships, and achieve their full potential. The program fosters personal growth, resilience, and a sense of belonging, making a lasting impact far beyond the greens. Jared believes strongly in the holistic development offered by The First Tee, shaping not just golfers, but well-rounded, confident individuals prepared for life’s journey.

Our goal is to forge deeper connections with local organizations, actively participating in initiatives that make a direct, tangible difference in people’s lives. We’ve experienced the incredible fulfillment of this kind of involvement firsthand, such as when we had the profound opportunity to adopt a family for Christmas, providing gifts, meals, and support during the holiday season. These experiences reinforce our belief that showing up, listening, and offering direct assistance can create incredibly powerful ripples of positive change.
