Unleashing Creativity: A Salt Flats Photo and Video Adventure
In the whirlwind of daily life, especially when creativity becomes a profession, it’s easy to lose sight of the pure joy of creating for creation’s sake. While sharing content with you is undoubtedly the best part of what we do, there’s a distinct difference between creating under pressure and creating freely. Turning a beloved hobby into a career can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword, can’t it?
Suddenly, something that was once a source of immense fun can feel intimidating and overwhelming. When your income, and the livelihood of those who work with you, depend on constant growth and innovation, the act of creating can transform from a blessing into a burden. Even worse, every creative endeavor might start needing a “reason,” a justification beyond the sheer joy of it.
To break free from this mold, we embarked on a project driven purely by fun, without any agenda or expectation. It was a reminder that simply being ourselves, embracing our unique individuality, is enough. The goal was to let our inner color and character shine, even in a seemingly desolate environment.
Fueled by late-night brainstorming sessions, spontaneous ideas, and a desire to push creative boundaries, we conceived “Be You, You Are Enough”: a photo and video shoot set against the stunning backdrop of the Utah Salt Flats.
This message, of course, extends far beyond the creative realm. In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, we all need encouragement to embrace our true colors and live authentically, whatever that may look like.
The core idea was simple: it’s easy to blend into the background, to exist in shades of gray, but we truly shine when we embrace our full spectrum of colors. Whether that message resonates through the video is up to you, but personally, creating this experience with Jared, Kim, and Jesse Moore from Modern-Atelier and sharing the beauty of the Utah Salt Flats was truly unforgettable!

Bringing our diverse ideas to life on location was no small task; it involved a considerable amount of experimentation and learning. And a word of caution: please don’t try the smoke grenade stunts at home! They generate a significant amount of heat and ash, which isn’t the most pleasant sensation, to say the least.
For many of the images, we used colored cornstarch, also known as Holi powder. Rest assured, we were mindful of the environment and ensured that the Salt Flats remained safe and pristine afterward. Everything was easily washed away without a trace.
While the clear blue skies might suggest warmth, the wind-chill made it surprisingly cold. I even had to borrow a parka from Kim between shots and stuff hand-warmers into my shoes!
We were incredibly fortunate to have Sarah Knight join us for the day. If you ever need a talented photographer or an extra set of creative hands in the Salt Lake City area, she’s your go-to person! Here she is, fully committed to the shot, lying on the freezing cold ground with smoke grenades in hand. She’s a true champion!
To capture the drone footage of me running with a trail of yellow smoke, we ingeniously (and perhaps recklessly) taped a smoke grenade to my shoe. Again, I strongly advise against trying this at home, as it generates a significant amount of heat!
Working with Kim and Jesse is always a pleasure. They also filmed our Cool Photo School series. They’re incredibly adaptable, innovative, and simply a joy to be around. We’re constantly looking for opportunities to collaborate with them again!

To make the most of our trip, we brought along Jesse’s new scooter and attached balloons and smoke grenades to it – because why not? Jared still thinks he’s Tom Cruise after riding it around, and K&J captured some great shots as well.
This day will forever be etched in my memory, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Moores for embracing our unconventional ideas. I hope it brought you some color, inspiration, and a reminder to always “Be You, You Are Enough!”
