Welcome to the grand unveiling of our townhouse master suite! After an exhilarating, albeit challenging, six-week journey as part of the One Room Challenge, we are absolutely thrilled to share the stunning transformation of our master bedroom and bathroom. This wasn’t just any renovation; it was a race against time, undertaken while I was in the throws of a super busy pregnancy! Looking back, it feels like a monumental achievement, a true testament to dedication and design dreams coming to life.
Navigating a complete home overhaul, especially one as ambitious as our master suite, under a tight six-week deadline is no small feat. Add to that the unique ‘challenge’ of being deeply pregnant, and you have a recipe for chaos, excitement, and a whole lot of unplanned surprises! Despite a few hiccups—including our notoriously unreliable measuring skills—the excitement is palpable as we finally pull back the curtain on our One Room Challenge final reveal. This makeover has completely redefined our townhouse living, injecting fresh life and undeniable style into our most personal spaces.
The transformation is truly dramatic, a world away from the original ‘before’ photos we shared in Week 1. Gone are the days of unsightly old carpet and tired, repurposed Ikea furniture – and honestly, we don’t miss them one bit! Before you dive deep into every carefully curated detail, please accept our sincerest apologies in advance for the abundance of photos. We simply couldn’t resist capturing every beautiful corner and intricate detail of this extensive two-room renovation. After all, technically, we tackled two distinct spaces: a sprawling master bedroom and its adjoining luxurious bathroom.
As we hinted in our previous update, we’ve also prepared a concise video tour for you. While our initial grand vision was for an “Extreme Nesting: The Renovation Edition” style walkthrough, showcasing every single detail of the process, we opted for a more condensed version for the sake of our sanity (and to avoid any premature labor induced by renovation stress!). We love sharing our journey with you, but some things just aren’t worth the extra anxiety!
One Room Challenge Final Reveal: Our Master Bedroom Makeover
For those of you just joining our One Room Challenge adventure, we’ve thoughtfully included several striking before-and-after comparisons throughout this reveal. These snapshots offer a quick reference to the incredible progress we’ve made. However, to truly grasp the extent of this transformation, we highly recommend taking a moment to revisit the unassuming, even horrendous, original state of our master bedroom. Trust us, it makes the ‘after’ even more satisfying!
We can almost hear you thinking, “What took them so long to upgrade this space?” It’s a question we still ponder ourselves! Our home, much like our lives sometimes, felt like a procrastinator’s paradise. But no more. The single most impactful change in the bedroom, hands down, was replacing the outdated carpet with the gorgeous Pergo Variable Width Autumn Hickory flooring from Lowe’s. This instantly elevated the room’s aesthetic. Complementing this stunning new foundation, the Very Square baseboards from Metrie provided a clean, modern finish that truly tied the look together.
To ensure a cohesive flow with the rest of our recently renovated home, we meticulously repainted the walls. We chose Sherwin Williams Emerald Interior Extra White wall paint, a shade that brings a crisp, bright, and airy feel, perfectly matching the aesthetic of other rooms we’ve been transforming. To introduce warmth and an inviting softness, we layered in a beautiful multicolor rug, adding both texture and a subtle pop of color.
To artfully break up the expansive white walls without making the space feel smaller or darker, we made a bold yet elegant choice: Ferm Living mint wallpaper adorned with delicate gold flecks. This wallpaper isn’t just a pattern; it’s a statement, offering a playful yet sophisticated touch that catches the light beautifully, enhancing the room’s overall brightness and charm.
Selecting Furniture for Our Master Bedroom
When it came to furnishing our master bedroom, we focused on creating a luxurious yet inviting atmosphere, layering textures and incorporating subtle pops of color and metallic accents. We absolutely adore the rich, textured look achieved with the gold dot and woven Pom Pom at Home pillows. These pieces, coupled with plush gold velvet pillows, create a stunning visual contrast against the delicate mint and gold fleck wallpaper, adding depth and a touch of opulence to the bed ensemble.
The majority of our new bedroom furniture was sourced from Overstock, known for its incredible range and value. A particularly unconventional yet highly effective choice was utilizing white dressers from Article as our side tables. This creative approach not only offers ample storage but also provides a unique, elevated height for nightstands that we absolutely love, moving away from traditional, smaller bedside tables.
Speaking of height, our new platform bed significantly improves the room’s proportions compared to our previous, much lower modern bed. It offers a more commanding presence and a more comfortable sleeping experience. One of the more amusing debates during the renovation involved convincing Jared to swap out our old, rather uninspiring ceiling fan for a sleek, modern white one from Craftmade. While he was initially resistant, the visual improvement is undeniable – it’s light years prettier, and we definitely won that battle!
Creating a Stylish Bedroom Media Area
Transforming the media wall in our master bedroom was all about balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal. We mounted the television above a sleek new console, creating a streamlined look that minimizes clutter. To add a vibrant touch of personality and comfort, we introduced a luxurious velvet pink and gold accent chair. This piece instantly became a focal point, injecting color and softness into the corner, making it an inviting spot for relaxation or reading.
Practical additions also received a stylish upgrade. Our new navy rattan hamper quickly became a favorite. Not only does its sophisticated design blend seamlessly with our decor, but it also boasts double the capacity of our previous hamper – a definite win for keeping up with laundry (especially mine!).
As you might have gathered by now, our passion for gold accents truly shines in this space. From subtle hints to prominent features, gold elements are woven throughout the design, adding warmth and a touch of glamour. The Lamps Plus cinch lamps, with their distinctive silhouette and metallic bases, unequivocally take center stage when it comes to showcasing this beloved metallic theme. They perfectly encapsulate the elegant yet modern vibe we aimed to achieve in our master suite.
Our Personally Crafted Wall Art
The quest for the perfect wall art for our master bedroom presented one of our biggest design dilemmas. We were eager to integrate our signature blush pink obsession into the space, yet it was equally important to maintain a sense of simplicity and brightness. After much deliberation, we decided on a creative, last-minute solution: a DIY art piece. We simply purchased a canvas from our local craft store and let our artistic instincts take over. The result is a custom painting whose scale perfectly complements the surrounding furniture, adding visual interest without overpowering the room.
This approach to custom art is actually very similar to our popular DIY Watercolor Wall Art, proving that sometimes the most personal touches come from within. The soft hues and abstract forms add a unique, handmade charm that truly makes the room feel more personal and finished.
I cannot express how delighted I am to finally have a floor mirror that is not only functional but also beautiful enough to be a permanent, decorative fixture in its own right. Its elegant frame and freestanding design add a touch of sophistication and practicality to the room. Adjacent to this, on my side table-cum-dresser, rests a small indulgence: a genuine marble iPhone dock. This was a little luxury gift to myself, providing a stylish and organized spot for my phone while adding another natural, tactile element to the decor.
One Room Challenge Final Reveal: Our Master Bathroom Makeover
And now, for the much-anticipated details of our master bathroom transformation! The journey began with a significant structural change: removing the small, confining pocket door and replacing it with elegant Metrie True Craft double doors. This immediately opened up the space, making it feel less segmented and considerably brighter. The addition of sophisticated Emtek gold hardware on these new doors provided the perfect touch of modern luxury.
The original bathroom was completely gutted. This meant tearing out the old tiling, the outdated shower wall, and all the existing shower hardware. In their place, we installed stunning marble hexagon floor tiles, which instantly elevated the floor with a touch of timeless elegance. For the shower walls, we opted for classic white subway tile, creating a clean and sophisticated backdrop. After much debate and careful consideration, we ultimately chose white grout, deviating from our initial design plan for dark grout. This decision proved to be spot on, as the white grout enhances the crispness and expands the visual space.
Without a doubt, our favorite piece in the entire bathroom – apart from all the dazzling gold accents and the magnificent freestanding tub – is this exquisite marble-topped Overstock bathroom vanity. It is, simply put, perfection. To achieve a completely cohesive look, we replaced its original silver handles with sleek gold ones, perfectly matching the elegant gold faucets from The Mine, further enhancing the luxurious feel.
Admittedly, we’re still getting accustomed to seeing our reflections in the two sleek gold round mirrors, a departure from the single, expansive mirror that once dominated the entire back wall. However, the aesthetic impact of this change is truly worth the adjustment for the overall stunning design. It adds a modern, artistic touch and allows for more individual space above the double vanity.
One of the most impactful, and admittedly pricey, decisions was knocking out the dividing wall that once separated the toilet area from the enclosed shower. This structural change dramatically enhanced the sense of openness and fluidity in the bathroom, transforming it into a much grander and more inviting space. Furthermore, it beautifully showcases the magnificent freestanding tub from The Mine, which now stands as a sculptural focal point.
Jared often remarks that showering in our renovated bathroom feels like being in a luxury hotel, all thanks to the exquisite gold shower system! We like to tell ourselves that this ‘hotel’ experience is partly due to our choice of playful pink towels, which we’ve ‘encouraged’ him to use. It adds a bit of humor to our daily routine and keeps the color palette cohesive throughout the master suite.
