New Orleans: A 24-Hour Burst of Color

If you’ve been following our adventures for a while, you might recall that my husband, Jared, and I took our very first proper trip together to the vibrant city of New Orleans many years ago. It feels like a lifetime ago, a time when we were just starting our journey as a couple. With our wedding on the horizon, we felt a pull to revisit this special city, not just for nostalgia, but to craft an even more comprehensive and colorful travel guide to New Orleans, perfect for those with just 24 hours to immerse themselves in its unique charm.

While many of our cherished spots from that initial visit still hold a place in our hearts, we’ve had the pleasure of discovering a wealth of exciting new gems. This time, our stay in the historic Garden District offered a fresh perspective, and the Henry Howard Hotel, with its undeniable charm, was an absolute delight. We also embraced the crisp autumn weather by collaborating with J. McLaughlin, playing dress-up in stylish fall ensembles. From indulging in countless carbs to traversing the city’s enchanting streets until our feet begged for a break, it was undoubtedly a successful and unforgettable trip.

Opting to base ourselves away from the bustling French Quarter proved to be a fantastic decision for our laid-back exploration style. This not only allowed us to experience a quieter, more residential side of New Orleans but also gave us the perfect opportunity to utilize the city’s historic streetcars, which gracefully connect the various districts, adding an authentic layer to our journey.

Our Garden District Retreat: The Henry Howard Hotel

Our choice of accommodation, the Henry Howard Hotel, was a highlight of the trip. This exquisite boutique hotel, nestled within a charming 19th-century mansion, boasted only 18 rooms, each imbued with a unique character that blended historic elegance with modern comforts. Beyond its comfortable rooms, the hotel offered a truly inviting atmosphere. We particularly loved the cozy living room bar, a perfect spot for unwinding with a local cocktail and engaging in warm conversations with the friendly staff. The convenience of purchasing streetcar tickets directly from the concierge made exploring effortlessly simple.

The hotel’s genuine warmth and hospitality encouraged us to slow down and truly savor our stay. Mornings began with complimentary coffee and muffins, and on weekends, a delightful mimosa bar beckoned, ensuring we were never in a rush to leave each day. This relaxed pace allowed us to truly soak in the unique vibe of the Garden District and appreciate the hotel’s thoughtful amenities. It felt less like a hotel and more like a charming guesthouse, a home away from home.

One memorable moment involved spotting a perfectly retro truck parked directly across from the hotel. Naturally, I couldn’t resist the opportunity for a spontaneous photo shoot. Dressed in my retro suede dress, a classic button-up, and velvet loafers, it was an irresistible moment to capture the vibrant, timeless essence of New Orleans.

A Culinary Adventure: Savoring New Orleans Flavors

Staying in the Garden District allowed us to explore an array of new dining experiences, many of which were conveniently within walking distance. On our first evening, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at **Cochon**, a renowned spot for authentic Cajun cuisine. Be prepared for a potential 30-minute wait on weekends, but trust us, their smothered greens are an absolute must-try – a rich, flavorful dish that perfectly embodies Southern comfort food.

The second night called for a more refined affair, so we donned our best and headed to **Commander’s Palace**. This iconic restaurant, a culinary institution in New Orleans, is nestled in a particularly picturesque and upscale part of the Garden District, making the walk itself a beautiful experience. The grand architecture and lush surroundings provided endless photo opportunities on our way to this unforgettable dining destination. Commander’s Palace offers an elevated dining experience, renowned for its Creole haute cuisine and legendary jazz brunches.

Speaking of unique sights, I couldn’t resist including a photo of a comically enormous shell-shaped grill we spotted in the yard of one of the elegant Garden District homes. This quirky find perfectly encapsulates the whimsical and wonderfully eccentric spirit of New Orleans in a nutshell!

Navigating the City: Streetcars and Strolls

New Orleans is a city best explored on foot and by its charming streetcars. While it took us a moment to get the hang of the streetcar system and its timings, it quickly became an enjoyable and efficient way to traverse the city. We even took a ride all the way to the edge of the Bourbon Street/French Quarter area, allowing us to experience the iconic district with fresh eyes, even if we chose to spend less time there this trip. The streetcars are not just transportation; they’re an experience in themselves, offering glimpses into daily life and architectural beauty.

For those eager to capture the city’s picturesque beauty, New Orleans is an absolute haven for photographers. We uncovered quite a few delightful spots perfect for memorable photo-ops:

**Madison Street:** Home to that incredibly charming pink door, a vibrant backdrop that screams New Orleans.
**Color Block Wall across from St. James Hotel:** A vibrant, artistic wall that offers a playful and modern contrast to the city’s historic charm.
**Henry Howard Hotel Lobby:** The hotel’s interior itself is a work of art, with elegant decor and warm lighting, perfect for capturing sophisticated shots.
**Garden District Neighborhood off of Prytania St.:** Strolling these tree-lined streets reveals stunning mansions, intricate ironwork, and lush gardens, each corner offering a postcard-perfect scene.
**Frenchman Street:** While the French Quarter is famous, Frenchman Street is the heart of live local music, with colorful clubs and bustling sidewalks providing dynamic, energetic photo opportunities.

More Culinary Gems: Our Favorite Eateries

Beyond our new discoveries, we made sure to revisit a few beloved eateries for a dash of nostalgia, such as Tableau, a spot we serendipitously found on our first visit. Despite our extensive dining, it feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface of New Orleans’ incredible food scene! By the end of our carb-filled adventure, a comfortable swing dress and flats were my chosen attire, a testament to the amount of delicious food consumed. I still dream of making reservations at Brennan’s, but that culinary delight will have to wait for our next trip.

Here’s an updated list of our absolute favorite places to eat, combining highlights from this trip and our previous visit, offering a diverse palette of New Orleans’ flavors:

**Sucre:** A decadent patisserie known for its exquisite macarons, artisan chocolates, and delightful desserts. Perfect for a sweet treat.
**Cafe Beignet:** We found this to be a superior spot for beignets compared to the more famous Cafe du Monde. The beignets are consistently fresh, hot, and covered in powdered sugar, served in a charming setting.
**Cochon:** As mentioned, a must-visit for elevated Cajun cuisine, with their smothered greens and inventive pork dishes leading the charge.
**Commander’s Palace:** An iconic, award-winning restaurant offering refined Creole dishes in an opulent setting. A fantastic choice for a special occasion.
**Napoleon House:** Step back in time at this historic bar and restaurant, famous for its Pimm’s Cups and muffulettas, served in a beautifully preserved 200-year-old building.
**Tableau:** Located directly on Jackson Square, this restaurant offers classic Creole dishes with a modern twist and fantastic views of the square.

**Stanley:** A casual yet delicious spot in the French Quarter for breakfast and lunch, known for its creative takes on traditional dishes like the breakfast po’boy.
**Lilette:** An elegant, intimate bistro in the Garden District, serving exquisite French-inspired cuisine with a local flair.
**St. Roch Market:** A vibrant food hall offering a diverse array of vendor options, from fresh seafood to artisanal coffees and craft cocktails. Great for groups!
**Drip Coffee:** Our friend Juley recently opened this adorable coffee and ice cream shop, a perfect stop for a caffeine fix or a sweet cool-down.
**Seaworthy:** An ideal spot for fresh oysters and expertly crafted cocktails, located in the Ace Hotel.

New Orleans Style: Dressing for the City

It’s worth noting that even though the temperature barely dipped below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, I enthusiastically pulled out a reversible cape! My reasoning? Partially because I felt like a superhero, and partly because it reminded me of the glorious fall weather back in West Virginia. Plus, this particular cape was reversible, offering both gray and tan options, making it an irresistible addition to my travel wardrobe. Feel free to pass judgment, but sometimes fashion dictates the outfit, even in mild weather!

While Jared and I always prioritize budgeting for New Orleans’ incredible culinary offerings, the city also boasts an impressive array of unique shops and boutiques. For those looking to browse and bring a piece of NOLA home, these were some of my favorites:

Whether you have 24 hours or a full week, New Orleans truly has something for everyone. From the historic elegance of the Garden District to the lively beats of Frenchman Street, and the culinary masterpieces found around every corner, it’s a city that captivates the senses. The cooler weather of fall or spring is truly ideal for exploring the charming neighborhoods on foot, a much more pleasant experience than the intense heat we encountered during our first visit in May.

**Wear Comfortable Shoes:** You’ll want to walk! The best way to experience New Orleans is by strolling its unique streets.
