This inspiring project was dedicated to Jared’s sister, Caitlin, and her fiancé, Zach. Their story is one of serendipitous timing, as they got engaged and purchased their first home within the same weekend, just a few months before us. It was a truly monumental period for the Smith family, filled with celebrations and boundless excitement. Naturally, a personalized “simple bedroom makeover” seemed like the perfect way to welcome them into this thrilling new chapter.
When we first stepped into their new home, it already boasted many modern updates. However, like many new homeowners, they inherited a few elements that didn’t quite align with their contemporary vision. The bedroom, for instance, featured a palette of dark, somewhat oppressive wall paint that absorbed much of the natural light. This was compounded by outdated lighting fixtures and some less-than-modern hardware and window treatments, remnants from the previous owners. These seemingly minor details significantly impacted the room’s overall feel, making it appear smaller and less inviting than its true potential. Their first priority was shedding those heavy, old-fashioned window treatments that stifled the room’s brightness and felt visually cumbersome. They also took on the significant task of repainting the majority of their new house, opting for a serene and versatile pale, modern grey. This “neutral color palette” was absolutely essential, providing a clean, contemporary backdrop upon which to build their personalized sanctuary, making it ideal for a “modern bedroom design.”
A standout feature of this “bedroom refresh,” drawing inspiration from our popular DIY Stikwood headboard project, was Zach’s enthusiasm for creating an entire Stikwood accent wall behind the bed. This innovative approach moved beyond a traditional bedframe, offering a unique focal point that introduces incredible texture, warmth, and a sophisticated, organic feel to the room. The reclaimed Sierra Silver Stikwood not only serves as a stunning visual anchor but also adds a layer of depth and character that truly elevates the space, making it a compelling “statement wall” feature.
While the ideal scenario might have involved replacing the existing carpet with sleek hardwoods, consistent with the rest of the house, our goal for this particular makeover was to keep the updates impactful yet “simple and budget-friendly.” This meant focusing on elements that offered maximum visual return without extensive structural changes. Instead of a complete flooring overhaul, we opted for clever layering techniques to redefine the space and enhance its aesthetic appeal.
To thoughtfully transition between the plush carpet and the striking Stikwood wall, I selected a neutral grey rug with an intriguing abstract pattern. This “layering rugs” technique, while seemingly counterintuitive to place carpet on carpet, is a brilliant design trick. It effectively defines the sleeping area, adds a luxurious layer of texture, introduces a subtle pattern to break the monotony, and visually grounds the bed, making the room feel more cohesive and intentionally designed. It’s a testament to how creative solutions can overcome perceived limitations and add a layer of sophistication to “interior design tips.”
Keeping the focus on the beautiful “Stikwood accent wall,” I aimed for minimalist lighting and artwork that would complement rather than overshadow it. The challenge was to distinguish the areas above the white Dwell Studio dressers (which replaced traditional nightstands for added storage and style) without overwhelming the textured backdrop. To achieve this, and to stay within budget while ensuring the perfect size, color, and style, I decided to create custom artwork myself using blank canvases from a craft store. This “DIY bedroom decor” approach allowed for perfect personalization and cost efficiency.
For the two pieces above the dressers, I crafted abstract designs by gluing strands of embroidery thread in complementing neutrals and vibrant pops of color. On the opposite wall, a hand-painted teal watercolor print served to beautifully tie in the playful pom pom pillows gracing the bed, adding a cheerful splash of color and reinforcing the room’s contemporary aesthetic. The original dresser knobs were also swapped for elegant gold versions, a “budget-friendly decor” update that instantly elevates the furniture’s appearance.
The wall opposite the bed presented a unique design challenge. It was too expansive for just the chosen statement dresser but not quite generous enough to accommodate a full reading nook with a chair and a floor lamp without feeling cluttered. The solution required a delicate balance of functionality and aesthetic appeal. I ultimately opted for a sleek “mod planter” housing a low-maintenance snake plant, paired with a luxurious velvet navy side chair. This arrangement provides a cozy corner for relaxation or contemplation without overcrowding the space, and by skipping the floor lamp, we maintained an airy, uncluttered feel, truly embodying the “simple bedroom makeover” philosophy and smart “room staging.”
How To Balance The Furniture Placement In A Bedroom
Achieving a sense of equilibrium in any room is crucial, and in this bedroom, it meant ensuring that the furniture placement didn’t feel confined to just two sides.
