Stepping into Her Shoes: Our Husband’s Experience with an Empathy Belly
Pregnancy is an extraordinary journey, a miraculous feat of nature that transforms a woman’s body and life in countless ways. Yet, for all its beauty, it comes with a unique set of physical and emotional challenges that are often difficult for partners to truly grasp. In an attempt to bridge this understanding gap and offer a glimpse into the daily realities of expecting mothers, my husband, Jared, embarked on a memorable (and often hilarious) experiment: wearing an empathy belly. This wasn’t just a costume; it was a weighted, meticulously designed simulator intended to provide a small taste of the profound changes a pregnant woman experiences.

Unpacking the Empathy Belly: A Glimpse into the Simulation
For those unfamiliar with this ingenious device, an empathy belly, often referred to as a fake pregnancy belly or weighted pregnancy suit, is far more sophisticated than a simple prop. It’s a comprehensive simulator equipped with artificial breasts and a supportive velcro rib belt. Upon arrival, it comes deflated, ready to be customized. We carefully filled ours with water and weighted spheres, which serve a dual purpose: to accurately mimic the sensation of “fetal movement” and to add significant weight, usually around 30 pounds, effectively simulating the later stages of pregnancy. This added weight, coupled with the sloshing water, creates a dynamic and surprisingly realistic theatrical effect, offering a truly immersive experience for the wearer.
It’s important to contextualize this simulation. While Jared carried an additional 30 pounds, my pregnancies with both of our daughters involved a weight gain of approximately 40 pounds. At the time of this experiment, I was 35 weeks pregnant, navigating the physical demands of late-stage pregnancy. My journey had also included enduring category five level nausea for the first 17 weeks, requiring prescription medication to manage persistent vomiting. Beyond the physical, there were the unpredictable emotional surges – sudden crying spells and an overwhelming fatigue so profound it could tranquilize a small elephant. These complex layers of pregnancy, encompassing hormonal shifts, emotional volatility, and extreme exhaustion, are simply beyond the scope of any simulator. However, a well-designed empathy belly does an admirable job of conveying the significant weight gain and mobility challenges, offering a valuable starting point for understanding.
The 24-Hour Challenge: Jared’s Day with a Bump
Our initial plan was ambitious: Jared would wear the empathy belly for a full 24 hours, from the moment he woke up until the following morning. This extended period was designed to offer him a genuine appreciation for the constant physical presence of a pregnant belly, including the often-overlooked challenge of finding comfort during sleep. Without giving away too much, let’s just say his endurance was tested, and he didn’t quite make it to the full 24-hour mark. We documented the entire experience, and while a video captures much of the humor and struggle, I wanted to delve deeper into Jared’s thoughts and feelings from that day.

Jared’s Candid Reflections: A Q&A Session
Here’s a deeper dive into Jared’s experience, offering direct insights into how wearing the weighted pregnancy belly impacted his day and his perspective on my own pregnancy:
Q: Was wearing a 30lb belly around all day harder than you thought it would be?
A: “Initially, I thought, ‘How bad can 30 pounds be?’ But it wasn’t just the weight itself; it was the way it shifted my center of gravity and constantly got in the way. It made even the simplest, most mundane tasks incredibly annoying. Things I normally do without a second thought, like bending down to pick something up or even just standing up from a chair, became an ordeal. And trying to navigate the house while also carrying our toddler, Gwen, added a whole new layer of difficulty. It really highlighted how much extra effort goes into everything when you have that constant front-loaded weight.”
Q: Did it give you more sympathy for your very pregnant wife?
A: “Wearing it for just one day wasn’t horrible in isolation, but it certainly painted a clearer picture of the constant physical burden. However, ‘sympathy’ might not be the right word. It gave me more *understanding* of the physical limitations and discomforts. But honestly, I still can’t truly imagine going through months and months of that constant weight, compounded by all the other symptoms of real pregnancy that the belly doesn’t simulate – the nausea, the hormone fluctuations, the genuine fatigue, and the anticipation of childbirth. It’s an intense physical experience that a day-long simulation can only hint at.”

Q: What was the hardest thing you had to do that day?
A: “Without a doubt, anything that required bending down. Picking up a dropped item, tying my shoes, reaching into a low cabinet – each of these actions became a strategic maneuver. It wasn’t just awkward; it put a significant strain on my back and core. I had to consciously think about how I was going to approach these simple tasks, which is something a pregnant woman has to do constantly.”
Q: How was it trying to parent with the belly on?
A: “Parenting with a toddler is already an energy-intensive job. Chasing Gwen around, bending down to play with her, and constantly picking her up felt like an entirely different workout with the empathy belly. My energy levels depleted much quicker than usual, and I found myself needing to rest more frequently. It made me realize the incredible stamina and resilience pregnant mothers need to parent existing children while also carrying a new one.”
Q: Do you think other husbands should have to wear a fake pregnant belly?
A: “Haha, absolutely! Especially if they have to go out in public with it, like to Target. It’s a truly humbling experience, and I think it would give many partners a much-needed dose of reality and appreciation. Of course, I’m mostly kidding about the Target part, but the core idea of understanding is important.”

Q: Speaking of being out in public, how did that feel with people staring at you?
A: “That was an experience in itself! I definitely got some of the craziest looks I’ve ever received in Target. People were clearly confused, trying to figure out if I was pregnant, or if it was some kind of prank. It was all in all pretty funny, but it also made me think about the constant scrutiny pregnant women can sometimes face, even if my situation was intentionally theatrical. It added a social dimension to the physical discomfort.”
Q: How come you didn’t make it the full 24 hours and sleep with the belly on?
A: “Ummm, honestly, I was just super uncomfortable and really wanted to take it off. Trying to find a comfortable position to sit, let alone lie down and sleep, was nearly impossible. The weight pulled on my back, and the bulk of the belly made it hard to turn or shift. I lasted until late evening, but the thought of trying to sleep through the night with it was just too daunting. It drove home the point that a pregnant woman doesn’t get to ‘take it off’ at the end of the day; it’s a constant reality.”
Q: Would you ever let me sign you up for a pregnancy pain simulator?
A: “Definitely not. One day of a weighted belly was enough of an immersive experience for me! While I appreciate the physical insights, the idea of simulating actual labor pain is a step too far. I have immense respect for what women go through.”
Perhaps we should put it to a vote to see if we can persuade Jared to try the pain simulator next time, for the sake of science, of course!

Beyond the Belly: Key Takeaways for Expectant Fathers
Jared’s experience, while brief, offered valuable insights for both of us. For him, it was a tangible demonstration of the physical limitations and discomforts that become everyday realities for pregnant women. It moved beyond theoretical understanding to a lived (albeit simulated) experience. For me, it was a confirmation that while no simulation can fully replicate pregnancy, such an effort fosters deeper communication and appreciation within the relationship. It opened a dialogue about specific challenges I faced that he could now relate to, even if superficially.
This experience highlights the immense value for expectant fathers in seeking ways to connect with and understand their partner’s pregnancy journey. Whether through an empathy belly, attending prenatal classes together, or simply engaging in open and empathetic conversations, these efforts can strengthen the bond between partners and prepare them both for the incredible adventure of parenthood. It underscores the importance of shared experiences and mutual support during this transformative time.
Where to Find Your Own Empathy Belly
If Jared’s adventure has piqued your interest, you’re probably wondering where to get your hands on an empathy belly. This was actually our second time renting one for Jared, so you could say we’re seasoned veterans in the world of simulated pregnancy! For a truly memorable and enlightening experience, we highly recommend renting from Home School Babies. We’ve had consistently positive experiences with their rental service. It’s an investment well worth it, if for no other reason than the endless laughs and insightful conversations it will spark within your family.
